I have a book somewhere and it shows press pictures of QE2's last steam voyage. It has a gold picture of Britannia and QE2.

Blue Peter were also onboard and filmed QE2 in stormy weather and the passengers disembarking. They also showed footage of the ship being de strored before she sailed for Bremerhaven.
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

Several windows in the Casino gave in as well during that last crossing, I was on nights at the time and remember it well after witnessing it myself!

The last sailing under steam was very memorable as it was an extremely rough crossing, not a full sailing, only about 1200 passengers if I remember and many onboard areas closed to passengers including the Lido that was being stripped out whilst at sea in preparation for the big re-fit.

We sailed on a very dark and cold Sunday evening at 19.00 on October 24th 1986 from Southampton bound for Bremerhaven where we arrived on the Tuesday which was even colder!
I joined QE2 in September 1983 as an assistant waiter becoming a full time waiter in the Columbia Restaurant in October 1983.
In June 1984 I became a petter officer in the Accounts/Pursers Office. I left QE2 in April 1987 to work on the cross channel ferries untill October 1998 as Dep Purser.

Quick question for Rich

D'you remember my old man, Angus? He was one of the Seconds on the last steam crossing. His name's on the list and I'm sure
he's in the department photo with you and Chillie (though with his cap pulled down low for a disguise). He's still with us, by the
way, he just doesn't do computers.

I remember your Dad very well.
Very fond memories too I might add. He was definately one of the old school. A gentleman!

Send him my best please, and to your Mother.
Damn this is a great site!

Guessing that you aren't really a 'genuine' quitter
Pleeeese don't - not yet anyway

But... just in case... what else needs to be done to dissuade you?

(Heading off now to think of a Good Question - and praying that it won't drive you to distraction!!!  8)  )

Hi Chris, I think most of those crew that were on the final steam crossing stayed on after the diesel conversion.

Did they have to have any extra training for working with the Diesel-Electric plant?
