I have just rediscovered two extra photos I took on this final trip onboard:

The good old days in her element and doing what she did best! :)  The power, impressiveness, and persistence (for the propellers that pushed her many 1000s of nautical miles from early 1987).

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

Thomas,
Any chance of my getting a copy of the photo of the junior officer walking towards the wheel with his arms folded & eyes shut? He was being smart, but next time he drives into something at home, I can remind him he needs to change some of his habits! He is currently sailing as 1/O on 'Aurora', (but on leave in the USA at the moment).

We were on in July 2008 as well. 2nd to 14th from memory.
A great set of photos.
Thanks,

Skilly

Hello Skilly,

What a small world! Never thought a photo of one of QE2's deck officers would identify the officer let alone be the son of a member of this forum! I have sent the photo by email to your address  :)

QE2 did a similar Med cruise in early July 2008 to me and my parents 20th to the 31st Med cruise didn't she?

Wish I'd been able to take more photos but SD card storage was so limited...I remember having to delete some photos to take others later on in the voyage (such as freeing up space for the bridge photos), but I tried to photograph what I hadn't on past voyages or generally less photographed parts of the ship for looking back on in the future (like now) with questionable results sometimes (some blurred photos on my part).

Would be my dream career to go to sea as a deck officer, and people such as your son are a huge inspiration to not give up trying to achieve that dream. Aurora smoked me and my shipping friend (a former P&O Officer on the likes of Canberra from the early 1970s onwards and later maritime surveyor with the P&O fleet and QE2 among other things) when we met up to see her and Arcadia leave from Southampton last November. We just missed Aurora's departure but were downwind of her exhaust which reminded me a lot of standing on QE2's aft decks on some occasions! Was Blair onboard at the time (last November) if you don't mind me asking?

Best wishes,

Thomas

Just realised (again ::) having meant to post on the 20th) that it's been just over a decade now since my parents and I boarded QE2 for this final voyage (20th July 2008). A decade ago today we were at sea between Lisbon and Propriano, for QE2's only visit to Propriano in 39 years of seagoing service. Forum member Waverley was also onboard for this voyage ("Mediterranean Mosaic") as were a few other people I've spoken to on Facebook and seen on this forum.

Time has flown by but a lot has also changed in that time (with QE2 and personally).

Thank you for the map from the brochure, Waverley. The pre-voyage booklets we kept and I now have also have the map on them I think. All brings back good memories overall!

Just rediscovered some more photos I took on this voyage, of varying quality, likely taken when I was "helping" my Dad record footage on his video camera:

I have just been looking over Waverley's videos again, also recorded on this voyage and I have spotted myself in this Lido video. I am the child walking in the far left of the frame from around 27 seconds in with a tripod. My Dad and I also filmed in the Lido with his camera (I need to get around to sorting out and uploading the footage we recorded, sometime for another perspective from the same time as it isn't public at the moment) and may have been doing so at around the same time (although I can't see you in our footage, Waverley)!

The chances of being in someone else's footage (in this case Robert's) are very slim indeed which makes it a pleasant surprise! We boarded on 20th July 2008. Were you on the same mini cruise as Isabelle and a few OLS family friends of my parents and I - that was from 17th to the 20th July 2008?
