QE2's Club Atlantic

When the QE2 was launched ,the One Deck Shop sold very exclusive jewellery.During the 1972 refit the shop was moved to Boat Deck.The One Deck Shop became a bar known as Club Atlantic.

When the liner France ended her North Atlantic service,staff members from the French ship were employed on board QE2 to work in the Club Atlantic.Sadly, Cunards tribute to the France was short lived.It was subsequently closed and the area reverted  to a shop specialising in china and crystal.During the 1984 refit the first ocean going branch of Harrods opened in this central location.

I have a photo from this bar in book i wonder if i could post it here ,Rob?
Or maybe someone has another photo of it ?

Do my eyes deceive me or is that one of the statues that finished up in the Princess Grill appearing at the left of the picture?

Yes, the statue in the Club Atlantic was 'Earth' from the Grill Room (which had been removed for the Columba Restaurant extension in 1972). 'Air' and 'Water' were placed in the main Columbia Restaurant. Not sure where 'Fire' went. All the statues were returned to the 'new' Princess Grill when that was created in 1976. Club Atlantic was removed in 1976 or 1977.

Here's a picture of the One Deck Bar from a Cunard brochure of long ago.  Does not strike me as a  very successful space.

I stumbled upon a Club Atlantic room picture the other day and felt like I had discovered something new.  I would love to know more about this and how it relates to the various conversions of the Grill Room/Columbia Restaurant Extension/Princess Grill.  I thought the Princess Grill was "the most original" looking space on the ship. 

When the Columbia Restaurant expanded into it and the Club Atlantic was installed, did they change the colors of the walls to of the old Grill Room to match the then Columbia Restaurant? 

And, when the Princess Grill was (re)created, was the room returned to it the old Grill Room's original burgundy colors?

What happened to the 4th statue "Fire" during this Club Atlantic/Extended Columbia restaurant period?

It would be fascinating to learn more about this flip-flop and the design changes.  Any one have any info?

I remember being taken to the Club Atlantic by Chris Connerty and Brian Martin (fellow R/O's) on my first trip in 1978. It wasn't easy to find!  As I recall you got there from One deck forward port side up a spiral staircase and was the cocktail lounge for the Princess Grill,  was dimly lit and had no windows.  It had the air of being the preserve of Princess Grill diners, as a result it didn't get a lot of use.

It looks like it would have been a nice place to spend some time, I suppose the lack of windows wouldn't have been an issue at night, and it wasn't an issue in the lovely PG champagne bar.

Do we have any idea of what the entrance looked like?  Was it a glass wall with a door like it was later?

This the shop as built and I suspect the frontage would have been kept for the bar
