Bust of HM The Queen (Heritage Trail)
« on: Apr 20, 2014, 10:44 AM »
Came across this photo the other day depicting artists Oscar Nemon and the Bust of HM The Queen which was in the Queens Room and now in the Queens Room on Queen Elizabeth. I had the pleasure of sending a copy to Nemon's daughter, Lady Aurelia Young, who had never seen it before.

Great memory here from Boris :

Off topic I know, but this was a popular venue for private cocktail parties hosted by First Class pax. When a passenger requested a private function here, we would book the location, organise a steward and then order the requisite number of canapes. The last was done by 'raising a chit' which went to the Kitchens, via the Controller's Office so the pax could be billed accordingly. The chit for a function at this location would be worded something like:

Account Mr & Mrs Smith, Cabin 1234
10 September, 1830-1930, canapes X 12 pax, UHMB

It may also limit what drinks to be served eg, Champagne cocktails, or perhaps beer and wine. But usually it was open - the host being happy with any drinks ordered by his/her guests.

UHMB was an abbreviation for Under Her Majesty's Bust.

Lady Aurelia Young has given permission to post this picture of her father, Oscar Nemon with the original plaster sculpture of the Queen Elizabeth II Bust.

Quote from Aurelia Young:

Quote
I think the original bust was painted plaster when it was unveiled. I wrote about it in my book‘Finding Nemon’ We’ve just arrived in Parma on a Verdi Festival tour .....
