Children's Room, Creche and Cinema

It was one of the first rooms I came to know onboard as a child in 1969 and subsequent trips in '72, '74 and I've not seen it mentioned on the forum yet.  Here are a few photos of the room in 1972.  Does anyone have any other photos to share?

To lower the tone of the conversation just a tad.... lets talk about toilets!


The toilets in the Childrens room were specially designed and made to suit the little ones! They were about 6 inches lower and smaller in diameter than a regular toilet.

The toilets in the Childrens room were specially designed and made to suit the little ones! They were about 6 inches lower and smaller in diameter than a regular toilet.

Hi Rob - Was that enclosed play area where the penthouses now are? And where where was that pool located - was it in a similar place?

Adam, the enclosed play area and the old Sports Deck was taken up by the first set of penthouse suites that were added at the end of 1972.  The small pool in the photo was located in the aft, starboard corner of the enclosed play area (you can see the propeller of one of the life boats for orientation).

For reference, the area seen in the photo of the little girl in the yellow dress playing shuffle board is the forward, starboard side of the Sports Deck.  The enclosed play area outside of the Children's Room is the aft end of the old Sports Deck.

The nursery had changed quite a bit by the time I got to see it in 2008.

Flickr also has changed, to my chagrin, and I still need to work out how to embed the pictures -- but you can have a look via the link above and click on the individual pictures to see them in large size with some text.

I had to ask for authorisation to visit the Nursery and to explain why I wanted to do so (to take some pictures). Permission was granted, and I was given a specific time for my visit, when I was given a friendly reception. The Nursery was now a lot smaller than at the outset, and it no longer had any portholes or windows, nor any access to a deck.

Wow, that is quite a change Isabelle!  I figured the standards of child care venues had to change over the years.  The maze of orange and white walls had to come down due to the inability to monitor children properly (choking and other distress).  I see that the ramp from the aft entrance is still in place but not sure why furniture was put in the children's theater.  Also, I assume the "Youth Chill Out Room" used to be the creche?

It really has changed. It would be nice if it had natural daylight in there though.
