I know I've shown this before but Rob mentioned it again recently so thought I'd report. The Grill Room Bar in 1969.

This looks stunning!
Is it part of the same space that you showed us (the PG Bar I think?)  - the bar with those wonderful uplighters?
And - if it isn't asking too much (!), might it be possible for you to say what colour and type of material the wall covering was?
Might it be a clever sort of tiling / or panels?
Thanks so much to you!
It's so good to think and wonder about the old girl, isn't it?!  :)

Theres something elegant about that spiral staircase!

Excellent pics - I love looking at this kind of stuff. Some engine room shots from As New would have me glued for hours!!

Thanks Michael, a truly stunning space and a real avant-garde design when launched.  But, one that remained classy and refined as everything else around it dated

Interestingly, I've never seen any deck plans that show the Grill Room Bar. Wasn't it located forward on one deck?

Yes the Grill Room Bar, or Princess Grill Bar/Lounge as it was to become was just aft of the C Stairway on the port side just opposite cabins 1020/22.

There are some excellent zoomable ship's deckplans, which go into great detail, available in the RMSQUEENELIZABETH2.com site in the Chief Engineer's Shop, plus our very own ChrisCunard has some plans on his website.

Thanks Graham. It is in a different place then I thought. I thought it was forward on one deck on the port side. Thanks for that information Graham.

That is where it is... I have deckplans, but I haven't had time to figure out how to scan them in, because they're much bigger than my A4 scanner.

Sorry I'm a little confused because on the Cheif Engineers Shop deckplans it shows the Grill Room just aft of C stairway in the centre and not on the port side.  :-\

Adam the entrance to the Princess Grill was on one deck accessed from the port side corridor right opposite cabins 1020/22. This took you into the bar/lounge, which was an intimate but windowless area in the central section of the ship. From there one gained access to the Grill Room above on Quarter Deck via a spiral staircase or the private lift. Although technically an annexe to the Columbia/Caronia Restaurant there was no way through to the Grill Room from Quarter Deck except through the kitchen.

Scanned in the relevant bit of deck plan.

Its funny, when I was in it, I never thought about it being in the middle of the ship because when you went up into the restaurant, it was all looking towards the port side of the ship.

That's what I thought from looking at the pictures, hence the confusion. Thanks for posting Rob.

What about tales from the Grill Room bar when it was reserved only for those upstairs, and in later years when it was open for all (what year was this, as a matter of interest)

For me its was probably one of the least most visited places on QE2, other than for an informal FOD and pre dinner drinks and a very kind invite to a select party there (hosted bar) or a stop of during the cabin cavalcades that was about it.
They had a most magnificent display of empty champagne bottles under the stairs on one visit..
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!
