Caribbean Cruise Ship Wreck
« on: Jul 21, 2013, 04:51 PM »
I am looking for a little help with identifying a cruiseship wreck.

Back in the early 1980's I remember seeing the wreck of a cruise ship which had managed to get wedged in a narrow channel between two islands. If my memory serves me correctly it was somewhere in the Northern islands of the Windies but can't be absolutely sure. Presumably the navigator was trying to find a shortcut!

I have searched various shipwreck sites but have not found any information as yet. Does anyone else remember seeing it?

Maybe the wreck of the French cruise ship "Antilles", which got pinned on an underwater reef off Mustique Island on 8 January 1971?

The ship caught fire after the reef ruptured the fuel tanks, and the 690 passengers and crew were ordered to the lifeboats and evacuated. Most of them were picked up by QE2 which was cruising in the area.

10 days after the grounding, the wreck broke in three sections, then slowly collapsed and disappeared through the years.

So, another moment in the QE2 Story!

I wonder whether we can add some further information to this event?

I had thought about the Antilles but it didn't really fit the time frame that I would have been in the area, the remains of the wreck would have been long gone by the early 80's. Also none of the images I have seen of the Antilles wreck matched the image in my mind and what I remembered seeing. Thanks for the suggestion, please keep them coming.

then slowly collapsed and disappeared through the years.

Would that mean the scattered remains are still in situ on the seabed in the area?  Or have they since been recovered and removed for scrap?
