I have finally finished this painting, I am quite happy with it. The bold shapes and colours make a nice change for me!

And on to the next, which is very far from complete and was a pain to photograph!

Your painting is a lovely tribute to QE2 on her launch day.   :)

The colours are so effective.

Glad to see you have started on a new painting.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

From what I have read, there wouldn't be a better ship to be on in them circumstances! I sold that painting on Ebay to a very nice woman who bought it as a Christmas gift for her Husband - I hope he liked it!

I like that now finished poster style painting.  Excellent.

As to the one sold on e-Bay; I wonder whether the buyer's husband just might be a member of this forum?

Finally, that new half finished one with the wintery sky and grey sea - that is looking very promising and atmospheric.  Funnily enough I did a painting myself in virtually identical light conditions, albeit not of QE2 but of a steam train; I sold it as a result of my recent exhibition but I still see it nearly every day because, believe it or not, all the staff at work liked it so much they clubbed together without my knowledge to buy it for the office! :)

Although somewhat off topic, I've attached an image of it here so we can compare our respective techniques for wintery light conditions - that much is certainly on topic...

Very nice, I can certainly see a similarity between the two skies. A wintery sky is exactly what I was trying to achieve, so I am glad it was picked up on, at the moment the sky and sea have had three transparent layers applied, I think the sky is just about done, the sea will need a few more, two or three I expect.

Here is a slightly larger image of it

From the bit of land in the background, are you setting this painting at Calshot, outbound?

That's not land, it was me getting the horizon wrong! I only noticed this when I took a picture of the painting, it will be straight next time I sit down to work on it. Now, where's my masking tape...  ;)

Ah, I see.  Shouldn't need masking tape, though - just go over the area very carefully?  Painting accidents can be the bane of our lives - if you read the thread with the step by stem creation of my painting, you'll find I had nearly finished a particularly tricky bit when I dropped the brush onto the painting...  :-[

Yes, I followed along with that thread before I signed up,it's annoying when something like that happens. I will use masking tape to be on the safe side, it also gives me a chance to get the horizon on the other side straight too. Oh, one thing I wondered with your QE2 painting is how you painted the portholes to be so straight! Mine always seem to be somewhat wonky, like I said in the opening post, I have a lot to learn...

With great difficulty and in a couple of areas blacking over and doing again...!!!

I have slightly termbly hands so I paint flat rather than at an easel; my wrist rests on the previously done bits of painting!

I see, I was hoping there would be some kind of 'cheat' I wasn't aware of! I have studied the great marine artists paintings (Robert Lloyd etc) and how they paint everything so perfectly straight baffles me!

Have you studied Ken Marshall's work?  I have no idea how he manages it.  Or Philip Hawkins ( railway artist ) for that matter.

I haven't studied Ken Marshall's in great detail, his work is so impressive they could almost be photographs, he is definitely a special talent. Robert Lloyd is a favourite of mine, I have all of his books and I have literally studied his art in them with a magnifying glass (!). I will check Philip Hawkins work :)
