Thanks Isabelle, (classic Brit Abroad me. I can get a beer or a coffee most places I've been, but that's about it.)
The statue itself is beautiful, as is her other work. Never got to see it when onboard, but I'll have to look out for it in future.

What puzzles me about the story. Apart from the idea of a fifth element, which I'll let slide as Artistic Licence. Why were bare breasts deemed unacceptable, but bare bottoms (at around standing eye level) perfectly ok?

I wonder whether Janine Janet is still alive...

I tried to Google her a bit this evening, and it seems (I cannot find a proper biographical article about her) that she died in 2000, and her husband in 2008. So, most probably we cannot ask either of them about the fifth statue...

Wonderful work though, so full of life and creativity!

I sneaked into the Princess Grill when all was quiet and took photos but am not sure if statues were there, this was in 1989.

Thought you might be interested to hear that the New York Times were in touch this week, seeking permission to use photos and text from this topic, which they found while Googling information about Janine for a forthcoming story.

The power of an open, searchable, website again!

Not sure if/when they'll run something but I'll let you know when I know.

Good news and it just shows that the wealth of information about QE2 on the forum is there for future generations and to inform stories like NY Times are doing.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

The Venus Statue was made but the president of cunard at the time did not want the statue on board as it had its bare breasts showing.. Janine Janet died in 2000 & the Venus statue was on display in Paris at an exhibition Metamorphoses . the Venus statue was purchased from Cunard & now is on display in the french Reunion Islands in the town Hall.....

Although I have not yet found a FULL photo of the mysterious 5th sculpture, Venus, I have found an image in which part of her appears! And, with Dennis Lennon and Janine Janet standing in front of it.  It is from the book of the Exposition Metamorphoses that Howie mentioned above.

Here is a link to the book. I've also attached a photo of the page.

The text in the book reads in French:

1988

This translates to:

1988
Venus, a platinum-plated bronze statue commissioned by Dennis Lennon for the Cunard Steam Ship, to adorn the center of the first-class grill-room of the "Queen Elizabeth 2" (Clemeni iron, Gohard gold).
March 22, at the initiative of Robert Ricci, the statue is placed in the lobby of the fashion house Nina Ricci, on the occasion of the presentation of the Cross of Chevelier Arts and Letters.
From May, project of bathrooms for the yacht "Khalid" (decorator Alberto Pinto).

The caption of the photo reads in French:

Janine Janet reçoit la croix de Chevelier des Arts et Lettres dans les salons de la maison de couture Nina Ricci, le 22 Mars 1988. À se côtés, Dennis Lennon, madame Raymond Barre, Jean-Claude Janet et Robert Ricci, devant la Vénus commandée par Dennis Lennon pour le "Queen Elizabeth 2".

This translates to:

Janine Janet receives the Cross of Chevelier Arts and Letters in the salons of the fashion house Nina Ricci, March 22, 1988. Alongside Dennis Lennon, Mrs. Raymond Barre, Jean-Claude Janet and Robert Ricci, in front of the Venus commissioned by Dennis Lennon for the "Queen Elizabeth 2".

So what we know for sure is... it was made, it was commissioned by Dennis Lennon for Cunard, it was bronze covered in platinum, we can see part of it in the picture in the book, and we know it was in the Nina Ricci House of Fashion in Paris on 22 March 1998!

But this is the sentence I keep looking at:
À partir de mai, projet de salles de bains pour le yacht "Khalid" (décorateur Alberto Pinto).
From May, project of bathrooms for the yacht "Khalid" (decorator Alberto Pinto).

It sort of a fragment and doesn't translate well -- does it mean on May 1998 it was put on the yacht Khalid???

It kind of sounds like it.

Thank you, Scott, for your detective work!

In French, "projet" means "plan". The next sentence (1989) continues about this same "projet" ending with the bracket "non réalisé" (which means "not implemented").

It would be interesting to know whether the statue is still on view in the Town Hall of Réunion -- it might be possible to find out :) .

VERY interesting!  Thanks, Isabelle.

I did try to look up the town hall in Reunion as well. There are several town halls, so I focused on the capital's town hall or "hotel de ville" in St. Denis. Sometimes in google maps at street view, you can go inside building. Sadly that was not the case here.

Maybe we could write to the town hall and ask them?

...or, you know, since you have already been to Africa ....   ;)

But wait, there's more...

Here's an article (in French) for the website connaissancedesarts.com about the sculpture going to Réunion Island. Venus's full title is Venus Out of the Waves.

https://www.connaissancedesarts.com/peinture-et-sculpture/la-reunion-rend-enfin-hommage-a-janine-janet-119252/

Quote

Translation:

The installation of Janine Janet's Venus (1913-2000) in the lobby of the Prefecture of Reunion is the first true tribute of her native island to her talent as a sculptor (see "CdA" No. 606). In 1968, the Cunard Steam Ship commissioned four sculptures to adorn the center of the grill room of the first class of "Queen Elizabeth 2". These four elements associated, as always in the work of Janine Janet, original materials: Japanese mother-of-pearl for Air, mica and shells for the Earth, white mother-of-pearl prisms for Water and red and stony corals for Fire. "The shell is a springboard for the dream, for meditation and, if you believe in God, it's one of its most beautiful expressions," said Janine Janet. Twenty years later, the Liverpool shipping company asked for a new sculpture, "Venus Out of the Waves", which she made in bronze and covered with platinum, a first for a sculpture in the round. Found by an English client of the auction house Christie's, this sculpture was installed, thanks to the support of Jérôme Monod, in Saint-Denis de la Réunion on December 1, 2006 in the presence of all the political and cultural authorities of the island.

The article has no picture. I'm working on getting us an image of this elusive beauty.

I haven't seen any other threads regarding "Venus" by Janine Janet anywhere else on the forum so I thought I'd post this here.

After reading thru some of the previous finds about the search for "Venus", I decided to try and do some searching myself and I came across the below website that includes a photo of "Venus". The QE2 is mentioned in the description too.

Could this be the "Venus" sculpture we've been looking for?
