Just a thought QE2 Old or New
« on: Nov 16, 2012, 06:34 PM »
If we travelled back in time and were about to set sail on the Maiden Voyage to New York and given how QE2 looked prior to The Dubai episode. What would we have thought. What would we have liked or disliked about the changes to her, inside or out?

I for one loved the Double Down Room and given the hideous makeover into The Grand Lounge do lamet its loss, The lovely sweeping staircase, the comfy seats and it always seemed to be busy. The Grand Lounge in later years l felt never really worked.Right after the 86/87 refit it was all lovely and new and did have nice seating but in later years it was nothing more than a glorified show lounge. The stairs either side of the retracting stage were quite nice to use in the daytime

Heck even the Mauretania as opposed to The Tables of the World and its various "Themes" I quite enjoyed the smaller themed sections, granted I never  knew what theme l was in. Not so sure l would have liked the wicker seats . Mindyou l always thought the Mauretania looked far nicer than the Caronia at any time. But the Columbia seemed to have a different atmosphere at night time.

And what about the Queens Room, Its original look with the Lounge chair, or the Cube seats or the present Blue Thrones  ???
Just some thoughts to get us started...
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

Shops: 1987 - 1992
Mauretania Restaurant: 1987 - 1989
Casino: 1992 - 1994
Golden Lion: as Theatre Bar 1992 - 1994
Grand Lounge: 1987 - 1994
Yacht Club: 1996 - 2001
Princess Grill: 1996 - 1999
Britannia Grill: 1990 - 1996
Caronia Restaurant: 1996 - 1999

I did not travel on QE2 post '87 remake and only know her in this capacity through pictures and videos.  But based on Flagship's response, here are my preferences.

Queens Grill: final look
Queens Grill Lounge: final look
Boardroom: final look (no real feelings either way)
Shops: 1969 - 1972 (on Boat Deck centered on E Stairway - forward of where they are now)
Mauretania Restaurant: Britannia 1969 - 1978
Casino: 1992 - 1994
Golden Lion: as Theatre Bar 1992 - 1994
Grand Lounge: Double Up and Down
Yacht Club: 1996 - 2001 but leave G Stairway access to Dbl Dn/Grand Lounge
Princess Grill: 1996 - 1999 (an eternal classic)
Britannia Grill: 1990 - 1996
Caronia Restaurant: 1996 - 1999
Library: 1994 onwards
Chart Room: 1994 - 1996
Queens Room: 1994 - 1996 (aside from furniture it did not change as much as Double Room)
Lido: 1992
Princess Grill Bar: whole career
Midships Lobby: 1969-86
Pursers Office: 1999 onwards
Stairways: Original colors
Forward Upper Deck Galley: Lookout Bar 1969-1972

Now this configuration would be the bride of Frankestein as configured but hope that someone could tastefully blend the old and new areas of decor.

I preferred QE2 in her earlier years simply as she had received less alteration and she reflected her original finishes. I first sailed in 1983 and I recall the wonderful Double room with its grand brushed aluminium finished spiral staircase. The Theatre bar, in it's super red finish with frames of film stars. I think the gallery had gone by then.

The Magndrome had just been added, never a great plan, and I recall being one of the first passengers to use the area. Within the night club, integral to the Magndrome the dance floor had underfoot lighting and there were two neon type pictures, one of London and one New York. The buffet area to the starboard side was somewhat small by today's standards and through here one connected to the Queens Room. The overall arrangement here did not change dramatically over the years and I'm sure this is the reason why we all loved this room.

The mid ships bar had wonderful green velvet seating, as did the rotunda area. Tables of the World, nice area but I did always prefer the Columbia Restaurant. Maybe someone would know if the statues which were in the Columbia Restaurant went to the Princess Grill or were they removed? The table centre piece lights were cool, one for sale on eBay recently.

Externally, the addition of Alpha and Beta spoiled her line and I was very pleased to see them go a few years later.

If anything is to be done to our beloved liner let us hope and pray she is restored to her 1969 configuration and decor. Bring out the best of her 'Old' and make her 'New'.

I think that QE2 still has lots of life left in her.

We must keep her alive

Thank you very much for all of the info that you have given me to use,

Kind Regards
