Hurricane SANDY scatters Cruise Ships
« on: Oct 29, 2012, 09:57 AM »
According to " Cruise Critic" more than a dozen cruise ships have either cancelled or redirected schedules due to "Sandy" coming ashore on the east seaboard of the USA , most of the ships affected are Carnival.
There was no mention of QM2 but she left NY earlier in the weekend, and as Sandy is due off NY early Tuesday
I presume she must be clear of the Hurricane, anybody on board that can verify the conditions ??

Judging by the live webcam from the top of the statue of liberty, it's already looking quite wild...

Hi... from a wet and somewhat windy Ontario, Canada.......I just checked QM2's bridge cam and where she is doesn't look all that bad... the sea is a bit choppy, some white caps but doesn't appear to be raining... maybe she outran the worst part of it during the night.

There has been a casualty all ready.  The beautiful tall ship HMS Bounty, built in Nova Scotia for the movie Mutiny on the Bounty and used more recently in scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean, went down off Cape Hateras sometime over night or early this morning... They were trying to outrun Sandy but started taking on water and had to abandon ship.... The US Coast Guard helicopters rescued 16 crew but I think I heard that 2 are still missing.  She was a beautiful ship.... shouldn't have been out there.

By 12:00 AM Saturday, the ship was being tossed in every direction. The sliding doors to the bedroom in the suite began to quickly slam open and shut. Around 2 AM, there was a violent tossing of the ship from side-to-side and most of the furniture was overturned in our room. All of the glassware was shattered as it hit the ground. Elsewhere on the thirteen-story ship, store shelves were emptied by the increasing power of the storm.

This one didn't stay far enough away apparently...

The Fantasy has a water slide/coaster called the "Aqua Duck" of which my new job at the Walt Disney Co puts me in charge of it's safety and integrity.  I should be going out to the ship (inport unfortunately) to see how this attraction survived its first major blow.  Can't wait to go!

Hey Bob - Does your 'new job' description require the testing of all water features on board all cruise-ships?
Very much looking forward to the YouTube version of your assessments!
(With apologies if this seems too flippant given the circumstances, #too soon?)
Congratulations, by the way - it definitely sounds as if you could be in for some interesting assignments!
Rosie.
