Did you know?
« on: Jun 17, 2012, 01:42 PM »
I'm trying to promote the forum and QE2 on Twitter by doing regular 'did you know?' Tweets. The concept being to surprise, wow and amaze the reader, and to get more followers.

Can you help? Can you please suggest interesting things for our Twitter feed? You'll be helping the forum and in a roundabout way helping QE2 too.

Did you know that on the 10th to 11th September 1995 the ship was slammed by a 95 foot high wave, followed by two smaller waves as she sailed through Hurricane Luis

I was always surprised when they quoted the old clingfilm fact, nobody wants to read about clingwrapped food, indeed the times l saw clingwrapped sandwiches being unwrapped for afternoon tea l used to cringe, thinking just when were those made.... ok you didnt need them wheeled out hours beforehand, but at least unwrap them just before they go out on display, its not as though they will be sitting there for hours on end.

Her speed facts and how she could travel astern faster than many ships can go forward...
Some of the foodie facts ie the old caviar fact that QE2 was one of the largest consumers of caviar
Or throw in the old classic by Peter Moxom that one of QE2s pool was fresh water and the other was salt water, and this was the one with more movement....
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

Lynda and Isabelle - I've now used yours on Twitter.

Rosie - I can use yours, but what I had in mind, was more like "Did you know QE2 had 2000 portholes?" and then the link... something to get their attention on twitter, and to make them interested to follow us even if they don't follow the link to the forum every time...

On a question of logistics....
Did you know that quite often on  major ports on the world cruises....the first thing sent ashore with the pilot boat...after we had picked up the pilot....was a beer keg? This was so the local breweries could match up the keg fittings and give us refills?
Did you also know that some people were sent on a brewery course to look after the 16,000 gallons of bulk beer?

Posted this on twitter tonight.  For twitter I'm trying to tweet something daily, whether its a did-you-know or a link to an interesting topic on the forum or whatever.

The caviar thing...In 1985 I think it was QE2 consumed 20% of the worlds caviar production.
Did you know that if you ordered a side of beef ribs that sometime you could read "CUNARD" that was stencilled on all beef coming on board.
Did you know that until bulk eggs were available it was one mans job for 6 hours in the am to do nothing but crack eggs?
Did you know that when roast chicken was on the menu they used to cook 1400 chickens at one time in one oven?

Rod, not sure that I really want to know the answer, but : what are "bulk eggs"?

I believe that a similar man (probably several) was employed to do nothing but squeeze oranges for a major part of the morning.
