Where are they now (QE2 Officers and Crew)

qe2crew and ship pro, I'd be interested in knowing your positions onboard the QE2 as you obviously knew Martin.
Did you both work in the Technical Dept? Perhaps you might know what became of Brian Atkinson (Donkeyman), Mick Earley, Dixie Deane???

I remember Brian Atkinson (Donkeyman), Mick Earley, Dixie Deane - also the late Tony Spicer. These were known as the heavy gang. All very big guys who always seemed to get the job of shutting the big steam valves over the steam drums in the boiler room when coming into port - very hard work as has been mentioned before elsewhere on this site.

Dixie Dean became a ships carpenter on QE2 and then went on to Cunard Countess, I imagine it is the same person. Dixie and I are Facebook friends.

I recognise most of the other names you mention but as for ship pro and qe2crew I think they prefer to remain anonymous.

Caught up with Dixie in Sydney late 2014. He was exceedingly well.

But I am referring to Dixie Deane, Head Chippy. I suspect you are referring to the Dixie Deane who worked in the Engine Room. (That's the problem with anyone named Deane who hails from Liverpool. But at least not as common as 'Dusty' Miller, 'Chalkie' White or 'Nobby' Clark).

I am sorry to advise our shipmate 'Baby Bomb' has crost the bar. He was 69.

Bob passed away on Friday afternoon 24 June 2016 at home in Greenlane, Auckland. He was diagnosed with an incurable condition last April and quite rapidly went down hill but was not in great pain - only extremely lethargic, especially in latter days. He did not suffer badly.

Deepest condolences to Sue and family at this most difficult time.

Bob's funeral will be Friday 01 July. If you are in North Island and would like to attend, please Private Message me and I will provide details. His family have asked that flowers not be sent; rather a donation in his memory to the NZ Mercy Hospice. Their outpatient care made it possible for Bob to remain at home with his family throughout his illness.

For those who remember Bob Lockwood with fond memories, I thought I would post the official citation that accompanied the award of his 1971 BEM for Gallantry. I know he would not be too harsh on me for doing this - it encapsulates 3 important tenets that Bob always strived for:

• a sense of duty;
• perseverence; and
• a sense of humour, even in adversity.

Official Citation 1971
During a four month period in Northern Ireland earlier this year, Sergeant Lockwood personally dealt with 148 terrorist explosive devices of varying ingenuity - 14 of them in one day.

In many instances he faced hostility from the mob as well as danger from unexploded bombs, and was often struck by missiles. Throughout he maintained the highest state of coolness and concentration which allowed him to deal efficiently with every device he encountered and was always concerned with the safety of others: he ensured the danger area was cleared of personnel, save himself.

At all times he displayed great personal courage and never hesitated to tackle bombs he knew could explode at any time. In this task he endeared himself to officers and men of every Branch of the Service, by his cheerfulness, humour and selfless disregard for his own safety. Never did he allow himself to become discouraged by the events that were occurring around him.

I will always remember engineer Richard Kenworthy  from the seventies, on watch in the turbine control room with his Isle of Mann Steam Packet Company cap on his head and some times clutching an accordion. In the eighties whilst the ship was in Lisbon he invited myself and another mechanic Clive (we were working under Richard on maintenance) to do a whistle stop tour of Lisbon during lunch hour +. He had read in a car magazine of a taxi driver with ( I think) a 1933 Oldsmobile and had been ashore to negotiate and book the taxi. A character to be sure.

QE2 sure had a lot of characters among the crew -- and being together for longish periods would have brought out their characteristics . Good choice, Lisbon, for a whistlestop tour -- such a wonderful city!
