Again, I am not sure if similar pictures to this are well circulated - obviously taken in dry dock !

I just happen to like it...

Hi Rob,

Yes it is - pretty much everything I have other than the album of 100 + shots when we toured the QE2 in Dubai at the end of 2009, is all before service.

I am just coming across things and posting pretty much as I find them!

Anything from, my Doctor's receipt when I had an injection on the trials in December 1968 - to a picture of the 'first smoke' from the QE2 as tests were done on 19 September 1968 - to dry dock at Greenock and 'the launch' on 20 September 1967 at Clydebank...

I'm still finding things.

Awesome!  I'm just thinking that they might get 'lost' in this section, and if they were in the design concept & build bit of the forum, people would realise how special and unique this stuff is.

AS I am finding these photos and various other 'bits' of memorabilia I am pleased to be advised as to where to post - I just have got enough together to put them in an album and they may get a little lost there also ?

Feel free to advise...

You will find that I have magicked the whole thread to this new location, where I believe it fits in well.   :D

Tomorrow, I shall have a bit more time to look through the others as well. Such wonderful pictures and memories!

The Moderators can move things around, so don't worry too much if you are not sure where to post. It can even happen that the best place only becomes apparent once a thread develops.

We have lots of topics that mention the QE2's famous bulbous bow, but this is the only topic dedicated to it, and I think it needs expanded!

Anyone got anything?!

The ‘bulb’ fitted on the forefront of QE2 was the first time one was fitted on a Cunard ship and this bulbous bow would punch a hole in the water ahead thereby cutting down water resistance on the hull. The bulb modifies the way the water flows around the hull, reducing drag and thus increasing speed, range, fuel efficiency, and stability.

Here it is being fitted to QE2 on 13 February 1967.

Oh here - those last two shots are MIGHTY!! Love the angles.

Interesting how small the bulb is compared to more modern vessels eg QM2 - which has a much more pronounced bulb to the point the skipper can stand on it!

Brilliant shots!

What I love about the QE2 Story forum is the fact that I never tire of reading information about QE2 and there is so much to learn.

When youngesteverpassenger started this topic by posting a photo (taken in dry dock) of QE2's bulbous bow, the post generated discussion, more photos and information.

Michael Gallagher posted photos (from his collection) of the bulbous bow being fitted in 1967, plus an explanation of the reason behind Cunard fitting a bulbous bow for the first time.

....and if you want to know about the technical side of bulbous bows on ships have a read at Skilly56's post on the Ocean liner vs cruise ship topic.

I think there is a post about the number of bulbous bows fitted to QE2, which I will try to find.

Yep so much QE2 information that you never tire of being a member of The QE2 story forum

I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank
