What I love about the QE2 Story forum is the fact that I never tire of reading information about QE2 and there is so much to learn.
When youngesteverpassenger started this
topic by posting a photo (taken in dry dock) of QE2's bulbous bow, the post generated discussion, more photos and information.
Michael Gallagher posted photos (from his collection) of the bulbous bow being fitted in 1967, plus an explanation of the reason behind Cunard fitting a bulbous bow for the first time.
The ‘bulb’ fitted on the forefront of QE2 was the first time one was fitted on a Cunard ship and this bulbous bow would punch a hole in the water ahead thereby cutting down water resistance on the hull. The bulb modifies the way the water flows around the hull, reducing drag and thus increasing speed, range, fuel efficiency, and stability.
....and if you want to know about the technical side of bulbous bows on ships have a read at
Skilly56's post on the Ocean liner vs cruise ship topic.
I think there is a post about the number of bulbous bows fitted to QE2, which I will try to find.
Yep so much QE2 information that you never tire of being a member of The QE2 story forum
