Passenger List Maiden Voyage 1969

As posted on my introduction I'm Clive and I am looking for a little help in producing a 90th Birthday present for my Father-in-law.

My Father-in-law used to be the Industrial Editor for the Sunday Express and often recollects on his time abroad the QE2 on its maiden voyage and being able to take the helm for a brief moment.

I am trying to find either an old photo that he may be in or a copy (not original) of the passenger list with his name on, maybe front cover and relevant page ?

Looking to frame along with a few other bits I can find on his past (The Concorde being another, nice work if you can get it)

His working name was Don Perry but maybe John Perry on passenger list and was on board as member of the press.

Basically interested in any pointers or help to get something sorted by next March.

If his name appears in your list is it possible you could scan and e-mail or something ?

A Mr J D F Perry travelled on behalf of the Sunday Express as Industrial Correspondent in cabin 4159. He appears on the attached Maiden Voyage VIP list for Tourist Class with other journalists. Cunard must have been so confident in its Tourist Class product as it seems all journalists on the Maiden Voyage travelled this class so good to get publicity for it. Either that or First Class was full (not the case) or the PR Department budget didn't stretch to providng First Class tickets (most likely the case).

I will keep on looking for instances where J D F Perry appears and will EMail you cleaner copies.

Afternoon All!

I live in Glasgow and I’m told that my granddad worked on the construction of the QE2 in Clydebank as an electrician.

I’m also told that he was on the first journey to New York as there was a lot of the construction workers sailed on this trip - I have no idea if this is true! My mum also said she remembers hearing that a lot of stuff had to be replaced on the ship due to people taking souvenirs of the maiden voyage physically away with them!

I’m wanting to find out if there is a record of my grandad on this journey. His name was Dennis (could be Denis) McFarlane.

Would someone be able to check for me?

It is good to see you here, and I hope you get to find out a lot more about that first crossing to New York and whether your grandfather was on board. What a reward that would have been for the people who had worked so hard to make this beautiful ship happen .

I had read somewhere that John Brown's workers had sailed with the ship to finish outstanding work and snagging and sailed on the Technical Trials in December 1968

It would be fantastic if you could find out information on whether your grandfather sailed to New York on QE2's maiden voyage.

The trials look very interesting! I spoke to my mum and asked her about that but she thinks now she has the dates wrong and that he sailed on the QE2 in the early 70's.

Her reasoning is that she was in high school in glasgow at the time and wouldnt have started high school until August 1969 which was after the maiden voyage. He had sent back postcards from New York and he sent one to the school who then made a big deal about it and they read it out to her class to her and her friends. So its looking less probably he was on that.

I guess maybe I'll find out in 30 years once the passenger records come out for everyone to read...

There is every possibility though that he was on the technical trial.

If any members have a copy of the Maiden Voyage Passenger list we would appreciate if you could check to see if Ray(mond) and Grace Aldridge were on the voyage and let us know the details.
