The saddest thing about QM2 for me at the moment  is
what grates on me is when they cant fill the ship shove in a single person deal, you would think we were second class citizens, the fact that lm not booking anything is by the way, its the principal of the thing.

I'd seen £699, but £599 is astounding!  Where have you seen that?  Including the flight?

Cruisekings and of course you favourite travel agent ;) It includes the flight as well. And l guess sods law if your a newcomer they will upgrade you lol ::)

I tend to think if you lower the price too much it can impact on the brand quality, not to mention the type of passengers. Then again from a company point of view it will fill up empty cabins, so where do you draw the line....?

I just had a look at a link Myles sent me to that offer.

QM2 - EIGHT nights to New York.  Eight.  Crawling to New York at a speed they could do in the late 1800s is not my dream.

Sigh.

I've seen a lot lower than that advertised on the Cunard website for a westbound TA back in the autumn, it was such a ridiculously low price that I thought it was an error, off the top of my head I think it was £399 return flight included but there was only about 3 days until departure.  If I've still got the screenshot it'll be on my work computer; I must have a look tomorrow.

So it could well pay to check the site for last minute deals as long as you have the flexibility to react instantly to travel.

QM2 - EIGHT nights to New York.  Eight.  Crawling to New York at a speed they could do in the late 1800s is not my dream.

Sigh.

But is is more time onboard to enjoy the ship.....and spend money.  ;)  That price is insane factoring in the return air, but I suppose the single supplement is 200% on that crossing.  I guess it's better to fill the ship than to run with empty cabins which wont' generate any onboard revenue.

I recently received a flash promotion for a QV trip that was within two weeks of departure.  Cunard most have been trying to fill the ship again.  I believe it was 15 days, from Ft. Lauderdale to Los Angeles, for $799 and that included the Panama Canal.  I was tempted, but unfortunately that annoying thing called work got in the way!  I guess I am going to wait till the first time QM2 goes throught the new locks in 2014?

For me, the saddest thing is that Cunard appears to have just about abandoned the NYC market for 2011/2012, with only one Caribbean sailing in the winter of 2012.  I know the crossings are still there, but I want to travel other places as well, via ship, preferably a Cunarder.  Just not seeing anything appealing in the new schedule. The new Celebrity Silloette, Solstice Class ship, will be doing trips out of the Bayonne, NJ terminal and those do look appealing.  Sorry Cunard.

Keep checking that - you may well see the price drop further as the day of sailing draws nearer!  See my post a couple of posts up from yours...

What l find interesting is by lowering the fares to an amazing level is the brand Cunard being devalued, Not only that but if you lower the fare too much you do risk getting the wrong the sort of passenger, those who dont obey the dress code for example. Anyone who has does the old one night trips on QE2 will tell you its not the normal QE2 passenger you get, heck seeing them at checkin will tell you what they are like.

Granted these low fares will perhaps fill the ship, But at what cost. Mindyou it must be the only time in recent years l havent seen any OBC offered, and again when you knock of the price of a flight...

We had an instance over the bad weather period when the hotels  around were dropping the rates like crazy. Someone suggested why didnt we do the same and when it was explained in great detail that dropping a rate to £40 by the time the vat was knocked of, the wages taken to look after that room the value of the breakfast there was hardly any profit in it. It did seem crazy to take a room on and lose money on it, not to mention when the situation improves and the rates go back to normal the regular user will wonder if they can do it then why not do it now.

I think you're right myles, but this is the most serious and prolonged recession/depression of our lives, and I just think they must have no choice. They can't risk the cost of a half empty ship...

They may be relying on the on board spending to make up the difference?

Mindyou Rob, we will know its serious when they start offering realistic single fares... ;)

Imagine the poor guests who booked a long time ago at a realistic fare to find this on offer, Its hapened once to me they dropped the fare by £1k and l was told in effect tough luck and a few of us onboard were none to pleased, sods law l ended up speaking to a couple in the Queens Grill on  a last minute booking, they were paying less than me.

I gues its a fine line between keeping the brand on a high and sail with empty berths or drop the price fill the ship and let the bun fighting in Kings Court commence ;)

Then again when you consider pre carnival days QE2 sailed with empty berths, My first crossing in 1986 middle of June she sailed with a lot of empty cabins. Those were the days you could tell exactly how much everyone paid by their cabin, no onboard credit,no travel agent special discounts, just a fare you paid which was the same as the brochure... those were the days :)

Guys,

Sorry to be slow here, where do you go to find these fairs?  Cunard's own site or a TA?

I will come back into the fold from Celebrity, but only at the right price!

Cheers,

Alex...

Maybe we need to persuade some of these travel agents with the amazing fares to advertise here :)

Or start a thread Which agent do you use and why? Are we allowed to mention travel agents on here, as a matter of interest.
The first one l used was Pickfords travel in Orkney. Booked the same day as QE2 set of on her world cruise. And exactly  6 month till l would be setting sail. She made a quick call to Cunard, all l had requested was a deck chair. she sent me the wrong invoice showing the commission paid to the agent. This showed to be £110 and my fare was £1185..So in effect one of my days on QE2 was what l was paying in commission. There was no deck chair and at my young age l couldnt believe how much she was getting for a phone call.....   :'(   Then l discovered the joys of the Cunard World Club  ;D
