QE2 in NPR broadcasts

Queen Elizabeth 2, one of the world's most famous ocean liners, is on her final voyage. The vessel will become a first-class hotel and entertainment center in Dubai.

Captain Ian McNaught talks with Ari Shapiro about what it has been like to work on the ship for more than 20 years.

Thanks so much for finding this Rob.  Great to hear NPR has kept this available online.  I remember listening to this while in the car on the way to New York City for work.  Sitting in the passenger seat of the car, I was  half asleep since I had been up all night listening and watching on the AIS site as the ship ran aground. Eerily I heard Ian's voice and perked up!  Traveling with my boss in his car, he has NPR on most of the time and I usually get a bit frustrated with their slant on the news, but this day I was all smiles!  Nevertheless, it was not a particularily fun day;  thinking about the departure, then getting home to relive it on the computer.

Part way into the clip, you hear the recorded announcements in QE2's lifts.  Hearing that again brought me right back to the ship.

Excellent! They captured the spirit of QE2 so well. I enjoyed hearing Elaine McKay as well as Ian McNaught.

Hearing the recording of the lady indefatigably speaking in the lifts, made me suddenly realise how foreign the ship must have been to an American! She is so definitely speaking English -- accent, vocabulary and all. You would be stepping into a different world the moment you were on board. I like the way this British atmosphere was maintained, even during the Carnival years.
