Ugly Funnels
« on: Jan 31, 2011, 05:38 AM »
I've never liked the untidy top of the funnel on QV and now her sistership QE, with the various exhausts protruding well beyond the funnel casing, unlike QE2's and even QM2's funnel.  The QV/QE funnels appear unfinished......until I saw this.

This is the P&O Azura's attempt at a funnel. :o  Reminds me of an oil refinery.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.  They've forgotten to put the casing around it! :o

Then let's have a sing song to raise funds for them.

All together now, a-one, a-two, a-three:

Celebrity's Millenium winged funnel.  :o  Perhaps the wings serve some aerodynamic function similar to the SS United States funnel appendages.

Who said there aren't any three funneled ships in service anymore?  ;)  These are all functional.  :o

Nice to see they carried the winged theme throughout.  The stern of this ship looks like a container ship and makes the QE/QV stern design look attractive!

From the logo on the funnel, I wonder if they have Howard Brown as the on board entertainer?

:o O dear, how RUDE, showing one's uptakes in public!!!
Dear AZZURA, that would have to be the strangest funnel I've ever seen! And good grief, celebrity MILLENIUM has had a face, er funnel-lift. She did not have those wings when I saw her last, has she had a refit? The X on the celebrity funnels stands for Chandris, but I'm not sure whether the Chandris family own any part of the company now, or has it been devoured by Carnival.

What was Chandris is now Royal Caribbean, not Carnival.  I couldn't say if any descendants of the Chandris family got any RCCI stock in the deal, or if it was cash.

Looks like she's carrying the X Factor sign.

Those are pretty bad, the Azure's is no worse than the stacks on an American "18 wheeler truck", in this case a bit unattractive but with sort of mechanical simplicity, they make no attempt to hide it (think top fuel dragster).  The Millennium's "X" is a big billboard, not attractive but serves a purpose.  The Diamond Princess, now this is a combination of ugly and, well toy-like absurd with it's "Jet Engines" (cropped image from flickr user Ebroh")

A little history about ugly funnels.

The ugliest funnel ever was the one that fitted the SS Champlain (1932), French Line. The unusual size was due to problems in smoke wastage.

The SS Flandre (1951) wasn't very lucky, either; the funnel was reeeeally disproportioned compared to the ship.

and, to be honest, the front view of the legendary SS United States (1952) wasn't very elegant too: the funnels were really too high.
The side view, however, was more graceful.

Matteo, thank you for these, and for your reflections, which show that ugly funnels have been around for some time!

I have modified your message so as to bring out the links to the photos on the web -- but I cannot locate the actual pages where these photos are mentioned. We need to make sure that we respect the copyright rules, so it would be very helpful if you could replace the hyperlinks with the links to the pages where the photos are posted by the owners.
