The QE2 Story on board QM2 : October 14-16 2011
« on: Nov 23, 2010, 08:18 PM »
Note - in summer 2010, we tried to set up an official travel agent group for this trip - thanks to Scott Ebersold for his assistance with this - but it did not work out.  These are the new, revised plans.

----

The trip - QM2 from Southampton to Cherbourg and back.

"Voyage" Name - Taste Of France - A brief history of Normandy

Voyage Code - M127

Click here to view the trip on Cunard UK's website.

Please read the following notes.

Each person that books this short trip has to want to go on the trip anyway, completely independently, and regardless of whether there is a TQS group also present to join in with, or not.  That’s the only way this can work, because we can't guarantee a group will be there because we can't make people go, however there does seem to be interest in this.

So… feel free to book it, let us know if you book it, and some of the other members here will try to join you on board for something or other

I will contact Cunard personally, much nearer the time, when we have some bookings between us, to ask if there’s anything they can do for us on board, as a gesture, and I will also investigate if we have to pay to hold a reception on board of some description or we just make information arrangements between us (see you in the bar after dinner).

Thank you for the details, Rob. I shall be making my booking very soon  :D  .

I have just browsed through the web site and the pages that open out from it -- the first time that I have been able to get into the post-QE2 Cunard pages!

My first choice would be a porthole cabin ("standard oceanview") as low down as possible (i.e. Deck 4) -- and I see that these are already booked out! As are the same cabins on Deck 5 -- only Deck 6 is still available. This seems to be the most popular category of all (mind you, there are not all that many cabins in this category...). Early booking seems to be a must if a porthole cabin is what one wants.

As this is a mini cruise, I am tempted in the circumstances to play with the idea of a balcony cabin, just to give it a try. I am pretty sure that I shall never want one again -- so a short cruise seems ideal to find out whether I might change my mind after all...

I agree with Myles that single travellers do not seem to be all that well catered for. Even if prepared to share with a friend, going by the photos, it looks as though the beds are all double sized. Are there any cabins with two single beds?

Oh, decisions, decisions! Does anyone have advice for me, please?

Looking forward to the group fun and the people we shall be surprising with our badges   ;D  !

Hi Isabelle,

I believe most bed can be converted to two single beds.  I think you just have to ask!

Isabelle - it's very good to know that you've been able to access the website, and that you'll be booking soon, and although 'advice' isn't what I can give you - there are others far more knowledgable and reliable regarding these matters -  there are things that might be of interest :)
I stand to be corrected - and if anyone knows more, please let us know!

From experience, it seems that Cunard will be releasing cabins (on all ships) for booking over time. So although it looks as if
'Deck 4 - with porthole' at the moment looks fully booked, that may not be the case nearer the time. You could ring a trusted travel agent, they could book you in 'on guarantee' that you will get a cabin - (and possibly an upgrade, even) for the amount that you wish to pay.
(You may well get a better discount from a travel agent too - ssh!).
The cabin allocations are made at a later date, on a 'first come first served basis' - I think.
As Scott says, I think all beds can be made to be singles.
(Person showing us the Oriana said, 'Single beds give you more space'!)

Definitely - if you haven't experienced a balcony before - this would be an ideal time to try!
Someone said 'Once you have, it's difficult not to get hooked' - there are many advantages, and although they look so bad from the outside, they give you the sea literally on your doorstep!
Balconies on QV are a Good Thing, and may be even more so on QE - as there's so little access to views up top, at least one can see something from your 'own personal space'!

Regarding restaurants - The Britannia is an amalgamation of The Caronia and Mauritania - if it's anything like the QV, it feels a bit more elegant than Mauri, yet with less character, with two sittings and much bigger than either. There are windows, and sitting at one of these is something we had in August, it was a fantastic experience!
When you are booking, you could choose to have a big table with together with friends, with everyone requesting the same thing.
On the 2-nighter, there will be only one lunch - and for those returning to the ship for lunch, I wonder whether it would be a good idea to arrange a Forum get together at lunchtime in the Britannia.

Hope this is of some help!
Rosie.

Salut Pat!
As far as I can see, there is only one cruise for 2 nights on QM2
Departs from Southampton 14th October 2011,
and returns to Southampton on 16th October
with the 15th October (day, not night!) in Cherbourg.

I totally agree with you Rosie about having a balcony. It's your own space and no one (in my case) blocked my view by standing up!

I don't know if this just applied to Queen's Grill but my brother and I had lunch in the restaurant on day one  (we were aboard by 12.30) and lunch was still being served at 2pm. So we did have two lunches on the short voyage to France.

Hi Jem
About balconies in general - 'Yes, but...'!
There's something that's very sociable about meeting people beside a rail as well, you'll recognise this too ;)
What a shame that people didn't think to share the view with you
Getting to the ship early enough to enjoy lunch on Day One, that sounds like a very good idea!

Pat says the cost is higher for him in France than it is for anyone else.  Is this right?  Why?  Are all Euro countries not the same price?  Can someone explain?

The cunard website is frustrating because it only allows one to see one's own country, and Pat says the Cunard France website does not even list "our" cruise.

Sigh.

Salut Rob and Pat,

http://www.cruise.co.uk/cruise/cunard-cruises/queen-mary-2/14-oct-11/40270fc/

En variante, le Souverain Criuiose Co. peuvent être en mesure de mieux toute offre que vous avez déjà été donnée.
Il n'ya pas de rabais pour le moment, mais ils ont toujours nous a offert en bons termes quand nous livre.
http://www.sovereigncruise.co.uk/home
Il vaut toujours la peine ronde sonner tous les agents principaux qui font la publicité Voyage Cunard
Espérons que cela pourrait être utile
Rosie.

Hello Rob and Pat,

I'm sorry that I don't know the answers to your questions about the Cunard website and prices.

Just an idea -  the following may be of interest / help to anyone thinking of booking in the next few days
Cruise.co are offering 15% discount on all bookings, this offer ends on 30th November.
There's a telephone number for people to ring from outside the UK
A basic inside cabin is currently from £424 per person sharing a cabin with 15% off this price (i think),  plus extra discounts
http://www.cruise.co.uk/cruise/cunard-cruises/queen-mary-2/14-oct-11/40270fc/

Alternatively Sovereign Cruise Co may be able to better any offer that you have previously been given.
There are no discounts at the moment, however they have always offered us good terms when we book.
http://www.sovereigncruise.co.uk/home
It's always worth ringing round all the major travel agents who advertise Cunard

Hope this may be of help.
Rosie

It may be down to the difference between the £ / $ and the € / $ exchange rates?

We have booked the cruise with Iglu.  We have just booked a D6 inside cabin at £324.00 each.  We had to pay a deposit of £80.00.  Can't wait.  We are going to fly down I think rather than drive, but have not booked our flights yet.  Can't wait.  ;D
