One of the reasons I hate reading articles about QE2 are the innaccuracies contained within them. That article was no exception. I am not going to list them, but suffice to say there are a few places where they are "economical with the truth" to make the article more readable? more sellable? I don't know. I have known this for some time, basically since I read an article about the ships boiler problems in Bermuda. One article I read made it hard to believe they were talking about QE2! So I tend to take all news stories with a grain of salt. As Bob Dolley used to say...."Believe half of what you see, and, nothing of what you read!"
Also something in the article led me to Robs pics on Flikr....same story for me there, scared to open and read because of what I might see.
Rob, no disrespect intended, the pics were great.
BUT, having left the ship Christmas '88 many places, to me at least were unrecognizable! And that in itself makes me kinda sad.

thanks for putting the record straight, it was the photo that got my attention having never seen it before.
I don't do Flikr 'n'all that stuff, but am glad you do & referred to it, it's only correct & proper that Rob should get the public record- that isn't mentioned in the item.

My wife and I were on board when this event happened. Only 70 miles from our home. We were on Canada/New England Cruyise when this happened.

Louis, what was it like at the time? What were you doing, and how soon did you realise this was serious?

My wife Janet and I were on board the QE2 when the grounding took place. Cabin 4073 right over where the damage was done to the hull. At the time we lived in Newton MA, about 70 miles from where we grounded. Quite an experience. We still have a copy of the US Coast Guard and NTSB report. This did not dissuade us from sailing QE2. We went on to sail 18 Cruise on QE2, 5 Crossings on QE2, including the Tandem Crossing with QM2 in April 2004, we returned on QM2. The last voyage of QE2 as Flagship and The first voyage of QM2 as Flagship. We have since crossed on QM2 7 more times. Due to COVID-19, this years trip was cancelled, we have 2 crossings booked for 2021. Out first voyage on QE2 was in 1985. Our first crossing was in 1990. QE2 was family. I am now in my 80s. my wife is in her late 70s. Next year could well be our last crossings. We much prefer the crossings over cruises. Cunard has treated us very well over years. We have many many friends, passengers, officers, and crew. Thank you Cunard!

Thank you, Laurence, for sharing your experience of the grounding with us! That must have been quite an adventure. What did it feel like in your cabin? At least you did not have far to go in order to get home :) .

Good to know that the grounding did not discourage you from sailing on QE2 and continuing to sail with Cunard.  I agree that Cunard generally treat you well and hope it is not too long until we are cruising again.

It would be good to hear more of your memories of the grounding experience.  Were you moved to another cabin?

It sounds like we could have been on a couple of cruises together over the years, all be it not necessarily 'dining' in the same restaurant! Well unless i was hosting table of course.
I was that 'grumpy' Security Officer who wouldn't let you disembark in NY until US Authorities said so, despite most passengers being close 'friends' of every Congressman & Senator, and their sons being Lawyers!

Tomorrow will be 29 years since the grounding of QE2 at Martha's Vineyard, which makes this a good time highlight this excellent topic for you to read.

Highlander 0108 started the topic with a link to the accident report . This was followed by lots of discussions and photos.

30 years since the Martha's Vineyard incident.  Was anyone onboard ship at the time?

It is good that this topic has provided lots of information that reminds us about the damage QE2 incurred.
