QE2's 'badge' (the Lion plaque under the bridge)
« on: Mar 14, 2009, 10:04 AM »
Hi Chris
Great to hear from you!

About Highlander'0108's post above - am I right in thinking the Warwick Crest was in the Centre - fixed immediately in front of the wooden 'rail' of the Observation Deck?
Something oval shaped, (red background with lion) was definitely in situ on 31.7.'09 - I was there for nearly 24/7 for 13 days!

Now, in more recent pics / DVD's /video clips it has vanished.  Hope and Pray that it is in very safe keeping.

It is also visible on Kev's new post of photos leaving /returning So'ton (Close up of bow 'end', 31.7.'09)

Hi Chris

Nice to hear from you.  Glad you had an enjoyable voyage.

I really hope the Warwick Crest is preserved somewhere.  Nakheel should not be removing these items if they do intend to preserve her heritage.  It is part of who she is and her history.  There is an old works near to where I live which is used as a heritage centre.  All of the company's names are still there as they part of the heritage, although they have not owned the building for decades.  Very sad :'(

This photo from Dubai shows the crest still in place - view it full size to see it clearly - https://www.flickr.com/photos/rpoll/3147769989/ - and so does this one - https://www.flickr.com/photos/saraab/3064162120/

About a crest, it's on this vid. clip - at 2.32 mins.  Is it in fact, the 'Warwick Crest'?

This one could be either a 'new' one, or it's been moved.
The Crest onboard (8.'09) was definitely set higher, the top of its frame can be seen in photos taken from the top of the steps!

Perhaps then I saw it 'missing' on some of the Timewatch shots taken earlier....!

In any case, this Crest needs to be preserved along with EVERYTHING else.

Has she still got her badge on her superstructure? I wonder of they will keep it on her?

< old dead image link removed >

If they do take it off her I hope its kept in safe hands.

That plaque has quite a history.

Commodore Warwick described how it found its way on the ship in a lexture onboard the I attended.

He was responsible for fitting it onboard, twice actually.  It is actually the second of such plaques fitted.

The first one came from the last ship he was on prior to coming onboard QE2.  He told a funny story about having the plaque removed off his old ship and having it crated up and brought onboard QE2, with several crew needing to move it.  He did not realize the weight of the plaque. It was later removed when a change in Cunard ownership wanted to update the exterior of the ship (was it during the brief time that the ship had the speed stripe and lion logos on the side?)
Eventually, and I can't remember the details, the second ship changed Cunard ownership and that plaque ended up finding its way on the front of QE2.  Now, the QM2 has the one of the plaques in ia similar location and he did not elaborate on how it got there, but it had to have been his doing.   I can't remember the full story completely on which ships "donated" the plaques, but perhaps someone has a better recollection of the history.  Was it the Countess and the Adventurer?  Commodore Warwick was in command at the time the ships  that were being handed over from Cunard.

I agree I think.  It jars with her sleek white superstructure.

I interviewed Commodore Warwick while on QM2 in 2006. On camera he tell us of his saving this wonderful Cunard relic. And how it took an army of men to move it. Plus a personal story of HM The Queen and himself regarding the famous Queen Elizabeth Parker Pens. I will be posting it soon on Cunardqueens.com where he discusses his vision for QE2's future.
