Thanks highlander0108 for posting that fantastic picture of the new funnel being installed. I have now saved the picture in my QE2 album, after "cropping" and re-sizing it.

Studying that photo, I was initially curious why the yard had the bridge wings tarped over from the elements for work to occur.  It just occurred to me why.  With the new engines, the controls in the console on each wing would need to be changed!  Duh!  Isn't she still beautiful in this shot, even with all the work occurring?

I have not seen this stunning photo before, of the re-engining and installation of the main structure of the new funnel.  Click on the image for full resolution.

You would think Cruise industry news would get their facts correct >:(

The QE2 during what appears to be an extensive refit, sometime in the early 1990s.

It didn't appear to be, it WAS  a major refit and it was 1986/87

Fascinating photos, Louis. Could you explain a bit where they are situated and what is being done there?

Isabelle on reply 87 all 4 photos are taken in the Princess Grill, on photo 1994 refit (4) i am standing by the new entrance that was just added with the staircase coming down from the Crystal Bar.On the background you see the walls removed on the other side is the Caronia Restaurant (then it was the Mauretania) reason for the removal of the panels was to be able to bring in the heavy equipments into the PG.

Louis - your details here are fascinating.
Thanks so much for all the photos and info!

Regarding the work before, during and after refits in dry-dock...
It would be interesting to know how much planning ahead could be done while she was in service and at sea.
Wondering too, who did the work once she was in dry dock?
Were her crew employed together with the shore-side workforce?

I just looked at this picture again.  It is QE2 in the JB fitting out basin part 2 but at Lloyd Werft!  Great photo.

My dad and late grandad embarked QE2 after her 'disastrious' refit of 1994 in New York for a segment of her world cruise to Sydney. They told me it was like a disaster zone with shouts of "Niagara" as water cascaded from pipes etc.

Notice no boats. They were 40 miles further up the river Weser in a "small" boatyard. With me! The same boatyard also did Volkswagen bus conversions to campers.
"Green" rules in force did not allow work on small boats but did allow work on ships! GO FIGURE!
