RMS Britannia, Asia and Persia models on QE2
« on: Feb 08, 2009, 09:04 PM »
Hello All,
I am posting two photographs of paddle steamer models.  I had taken a good number of photos of these two superb models onboard the QE2 during my cruise in July last year.   (Remember lost camera )

I had good close up views of the names and information about these steamers at that time.  Luckily a friend of my mothers was on the last cruise and she has taken a couple of photos for me which I just received today. Problem is that I do not know the names or any info about the paddle steamers.

Anyone able to help?

Gosh, in these photos the two ships look very nearly identical.
Well, they almost were in person, probably...   ;D

They are Asia and Britannia.

I'm going to say that the top one is Asia, and the bottom one is Britannia.  I think.

No, pretty sure of it...   ::)

Here's a closer-up one of Asia, plus plaque.  Despite the size of my photo collection, I don't seem to have the other one.  I know a man who might, but getting him to supply things one requests is not always a speedy exercise ...

There are lots of images of the QE2 on a site that I've just posted in the Gallery -
Including several images and details about the Paddle Steamers!

There was a model of the RMS Britannia on QE2 and like some of her other models, it may have changed location from time to time.  One of the forum members noticed a model in the background of a photo of the original location of the Britannia figurehead in the Britannia Restaurant by the Stairway A entrance (see the red circled area).

The photo of the model is below but blurry.  The clear photo of the model is a screen capture of the model from Chris Frame's YouTube video "What was it like onboard QE2: Comprehensive Tour & History of Cunard Famous Queen ELizabeth 2!" but I don't know the model's location in the video.

Can anyone verify that the blurry model in the photo is Britannia?  If it isn't, does anyone know what model it may be?

The Britannia model featured behind the Britannia figurehead was one of two models in the Britannia Restaurant, the other being of Persia. When (S)Tables of the World was introduced in 1977 these two models were banished to the display cases on Two Deck A Stairway lobby on either side of where the Computer Centre would be placed. In the 1994 refit the model was placed in a cabinet outside the Yacht Club. Today it resides in the Hotel QE2 Terminal.

Top pic: a poor one of the model in Britannia Restaurant 1969 - 1977

Middle pic: outside Yacht Club 1994 - 2008

Bottom pic: Dubai Terminal 2018 -

The smaller Britannia model at the bottom of the stairs in the Britannia Grill was placed on board in the mid-1990s and had a small (but oversized to the model) cow placed on it to remind people Britannia passengers received their milk from a cow that was killed on the last day to give everyone a decent farewell meal after two weeks of hell!

Looking more closely at the blurry close up image in Bob C's post it looks like that model has two funnels which would make it the Persia which would also fit on the location of the model in the Restaurant. Here is the Persia model...

Fantastic piece of detective work Michael.

Amazing how a simple discussion on Bob's photo of the Britannia Figurehead led to someone noticing the model in a case, asking what ship and now it looks like we have an answer.

Another example of The QE2 Story members keeping the memory of QE2 alive.

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

The QE2 must be the most chronicled ship maritime history.  Well done Rob, administrators and contributors!

Agree, especially since there seems to be quite a size differential between the two models.  The Persia model seems to be smaller and more along the lines of the size of the blur in the photo

Thanks Michael. Do you have an approximate date when the models were in the cabinet outside the computer centre.
