A dream not come true
« on: Oct 24, 2009, 03:52 PM »

The QE2 for 40 years sailed to all ( almost ) corners of the World.Where did you dream of going with the QE2 but it never came true?

Sadly i never went around South America and therefore not sailing into Rio De Janeiro. But luckly i did do it on another ship.

Having her remain in service long enough so I could afford to take a World Cruise, or perhaps a segment in the South Pacific.

I would liked to have made at least one trip on her - anywhere - but didn't get a chance.  :(

However, I did get to visit her once courtesy of a friend's next-door-neighbour.  :)

World Cruise (my dad and grandad did it just after her disastrious refit in 1994/5 and they sailed from New York to Sydney) and Transatlantic to New York (although have sailed on her across the Atlantic to Fort Lauderdale)

I missed doing a Transat crossing, which I would have loved to do and would have dearly wished she could have remained here in the UK but the dreams that did come true far outweigh those that didn't!
Start every day with a smile and get it over with

I would have liked to do a back to back Atlantic return crossing.

Anyone else wants to share the dream trip that did not happen?

Did Suez twice on QE2.  Would have loved to do Panama.  We nearly did it on Caronia, but Cunard changed the Caronia schedule and moved us over to QE2.

Yes, Louis.

Our dream not come true, concerned :

  • our very last QE2 port
  • our very last anchor port
  • our very last chance to have an unobstructed view of QE2's exterior
  • our very last sailaway
  • a much awaited final call to a port that QE2 had missed several times
  • a port we had been looking forward to seeing for ourselves
  • a port about which I had known from my girlhood on, as I had a penfriend there
  • a port where we had been promised a Newfoundland Dog, a Labrador Retriever and an Accordion Player
  • a port where we had booked a fascinating excursion...

Can you guess which it was?

Read all about it here :

A sad day indeed... but of course also a happy day, as we were on QE2!

The World Cruise, was always a dream voyage since l can remember. But as my own voyages notched up l have nearly gone round it twice when the days are added up.

BUT over the years speaking with various passengers and some very dear friends, Im not sure now that l would have enjoyed it :o  (yes l know imagine me saying that) for a start, think of that dreaded weight gain, Three weeks is long enough on that basis, even then the last few nights im into my expanding trousers, the luggage, l never could travel light, and oh lord the souvenirs, then think on all the stuff you get onboard, the daily programmes, l always picked a few extra each day, the onboard newspaper, and all the other stuff that finds its way into the cabin, generally anything that came into the cabin, came home with me, nothing really ended up in the bin. Then of course there is the onboard purchases. How on earth do you get all the luggage home. Four/five cases after  a cruise is enough that even by train it can cause problems, flying home isnt an option as the cases are well over any luggage weight.

Its stupid but l now find it easier to fly home with six cases from LA as the "system" makes everything so easy.

There are times when you can become quite blase about the voyages, upto a week l always considered to short, and even then unpacked very little, upto ten days- two weeks you could call that a cruise, and then when you were sailing for over two weeks, now that was a proper voyage, you could fully unpack and sit back and enjoy the trip..  A three week cruise was for me about as long as l could manage.

Then of course you have the ocean motion and the emotion of the last days onboard as you get attached to new found friends, l can get weepy eyed leaving ports l dont even like... But in all seriousness a World Cruise would probably kill me....  :'(
