Invergordon.

Some friends of ours are currently 'experiencing' their first cruise onboard Ambassador's  'MV Ambiance' and tomorrow are in Invergordon, 0700-1400, but sadly the weather for those times doesn't look too good, drizzle forecast!

But i digress, I can't remember which year it was but i was on QE2 when we went to Invergordon as part of a UK Cruise, onboard also were the BBC TV Ground Force Team, including Charlie Dimmock- yes 'she' of the thin T shirts! They were going to do a garden makeover there but i can't remember anything about this garden and the internet doesn't help revive my memory. Was anybody else on this cruise and can remember what the garden was called?

However a more interesting story concerns the first time i visited Invergordon. I was on RVS [Royal Viking Sun] when in 1997, as part of a UK cruise we visited Invergordon. I had, as was part of my responsibilities as SSO, supervised the boarding of the Harbour Pilot prior to arrival, then escorted him to the bridge and, as was tradition, introduced him to the Captain, before returning to the gangway to communicate with the Bridge the gangway positioning for coming alongside. Our stay was uneventful, well apart from the passengers being involved in the opening of the garden.
Come sailing time i was at the gangway preparing for a swift departure when the Harbour Pilot arrived, as i was busy sorting something else out at the time, although i saw him i didn't directly 'see' him and therefore didn't notice that it was a different Harbour Pilot. The QM checked his ID and escorted him to the Bridge. Anyway after sailing i went to the Bridge to collect the Pilot and escort him down to the pilot door, so he could board his pilot boat to take him back ashore.
On the Bridge he was talking to the Captain about maritime second hand store in Plymouth, an upcoming port on that particular cruise, but couldn't remember it's name. The Norwegian Captain was part of a group restoring an old tug boat back in his native Bergen. This Maritime Store was a place i knew so told him it's name, he then turned, looked at me and said 'Andy Holloway!' As soon as i saw his face properly i recognised him as a good friend from my school days. In fact we sat next too each other and played rugby together for a few years. He had left school a year after me and gone to Plymouth Maritime College, qualified as a Deck Officer with Shell tankers. Gradually he'd worked his way up through the ranks to be a Captain[Master Mariner]. Previous to being a Pilot at Invergordon he had worked for Maersk as an Oil Rig 'Positioning Captain', a VERY responsible job. When he told the Captain that we hadn't met for over 25 years but still recognised each other, the Captain was absolutely astonished. He often referred to it in the weeks left on both our contracts.  I still keep in touch with 'my friend' via Christmas cards, he's retired now and lives down in Cornwall.

Good story about meeting up with your school friend after all those years.

I couldn't find a name for the garden makeover, but I did find a reference in the Daily Echo, to Charlie Dimmock giving lectures on QE2 in May 2005.  I wonder if that is the same date that you remember her being on the ship.

Maybe Michael could check his 'little Red book' and confirm if that cruise went to Invergordon. It fits time wise as QE2 was in Portsmouth for the Trafalgar fleet Review on 28th June 2005. So May time around UK, then a quick 12 day Trannie and back in S'ton in time for tea & stickies at Fleet Review. Now there's another story.

As an aside my Grandad's one trip on QE2 was the Trafalgar 200 cruise. We watched his departure from Calshot on 25th June 2005, my Dad photographing it - also getting the photo of QE2 with the then local RNLI lifeboat framed.

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

I had a look at the abstract log but could only find a visit to Invergordon on 1 August 2005.  I also check the years from 2002 and could not find any other visits to Invergordon.  Perhaps forum members who remember visiting Invergordon on the QE2 can provide more information.

Thanks Myles for sharing the photos of QE2's visit to Invergordon and the newspaper clip with the information on preparations for the visit.

3 May 2006 Article for QE2's planned visit to Invergordon on 1 August 2006.  The article mentions that this would be the fourth visit of QE2 to Invergordon. However on the Abstract Log the itinerary details indicate QE2 visiting Stavanger in Norway on 1 August 2006. Could there have been a change in the itinerary?

The Cromarty archive  shows pictures and dates of QE2's visits to Invergordon

There is a photo suggesting QE2's first Invergordon as 1994.  However, another photo suggest 1995 as her first visit and this ties in with the Abstract Log entry stating the Maiden visit as 4 September1995

QE2's four visit to Invergordon:
4 September 1995 - Maiden Visit
26 August 1998
15 July 2000
1 |August 2005 (abstract log)

Now back to Andy's question about Charlie Dimmock and the BBC Groud Force Team.  I found a BBC 2 information that the team were in Culross to film.  The date for when the program was first broadcast was October 1999. This could fit with the date QE2 was in Invergordon in 1998. The Team were also in Invergordon in 2000 (see below) which may be the one Andy was thinking about.

Andy does this fit with your memory of the Garden Force Team being on the ship?

Lynda,

It looks to me like it must have been the July 2000 visit as i'd only transferred to QE2 from Caronia/Vistafjord in May of that year.

As to the Garden [car park] 'transformed', on the Wikipedia HMS Natal page it mentions the Memorial garden and the fact that it was 'opened' by Charlie Dimmock on 15th July 2000.

Memorial to the deceased, Durban
A memorial to the ship was erected in Durban in 1927.[6] A garden known as Natal Gardens was opened on 15 July 2000 by celebrity gardener Charlie Dimmock, at Invergordon which contains a commemorative plaque remembering Natal.[21] The plaque itself was unveiled in June 1992.[22]

The wreck itself is now designated as a controlled site under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.[23][24]

It's good to know that i can still remember somethings, even if i forgot where i put my wife's birthday card last week! Fortunately i found it mid morning on the day!

Your memory of Charlie Dimmock on the QE2 resulted in interesting discussion on the topic. More facts we would not have known about had it not been for your posting on the forum.  :)
