A cruise ship's emissions are the same as 1 million cars: report

A luxury cruise vacation may sound like a perfect dream holiday, but a German environmental organization says that in terms of environmental impact, the industry is an absolute nightmare.

 Follow up to Robs item makes interesting reading , QM2 gets A stars all round for example
https://foe.org/cruise-report-card/       1 Youtube video from Turkish tv states just 15 ships (don't say which)
cause more pollution than all the cars in the world..

A frequent comment onboard when passing another cruise ship emitting clouds of dark smoke;

"It's good to see so and so doing 'their bit' for global warming! "

Interesting report in todays Guardian, P34, apparently most companies are going the way of retro fitting  scrubbers before new regulations come into force next year. The cheaper option apparently.  Didn't know that all scrubbers do, is to wash the dirty fuel before use, the manky water is then dumped at sea or deposited on shore. The subtext is that most cruise companies will dump at sea , causing marine damage especially where a lot of ships congregate.
 Could do with Skilly....

Cruise ship Captains and Environmental Officers have to sign off on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that goes over the side under strict rules already in force, including any form of liquid going into the sea.

But as it's the Guardian I'll take it with a ton of salt. For those who don't know the Guardian is the Daily Mail for lilly livered saviours of the world!

As a guardian subscriber! ...I think the cruise companies have been very slow to do anything about this, as they raked in millions in profits, and I was truly appalled at what was coming out of Queen Mary 2 in the Fjords last year... I really felt like a hypocrite, and I think that was after her scrubbers had been fitted?!

Me too!! While I have not as such subscribed, I do send them a donation from time to time, as I regularly appreciate their writing. As it turns out, one of my more recent friends is one of their leader writers.

I just found out about this and thought it was interesting.

Up until recently, a carbon-neutral combustion engine was the stuff of dreams. Now it may soon become reality. The secret lies in synthetic or carbon-neutral fuels, whose manufacturing process captures CO₂ — thereby making a significant contribution to limiting global warming.

Is it a way that ships could become "clean" ?
