Those stairs were famous for an incident during the Russian revolution when the imperial guards advanced down them firing on the revolutionaries, it is portrayed on film in "Battleship Potemkin".

There were also some other ' things ' for sale up the steps as well, but far more ' dangerous ' health wise, than AK 47!
