Early Photos of QE2
« on: Jan 11, 2015, 01:10 PM »
Some nice photos here - http://videoboss.smugmug.com/Cunard-Ships/QE2-Early-Years/

I'm not sure we've discussed it before, but what were the large white dome things near to both the swimming pools?  You can see them in all the early photos, then at some point they disappear.

Given the sequence of these photos, I'm thinking these photos are pre-1972 when bon voyage parties and tours were allowed.

I don't remember those things being there in 1978 when I joined and it is hard to try to guess what they are, based on what can be seen of them.

They appear to have some kind of light fitting inside the top so perhaps their sole purpose was for deck illumination.

Very nice indeed.   A few of the photographs appear to be polaroids and the date is stamped on the white border June '70. I love the muted tones.
I remember those white igloo shaped contraptions from my transatlantic trip in August 1974.  In fact they always got in my way when I was trying to photograph something beyond them.  Yes, they do appear to have lights but not sure why they were so massive.

The lookout bar was amazing! Very space age!

The upper deck bar is the bees knees

Satellite Navigation geodesic domes I would think. I recall that SAT-NAV was the very latest thing in those days and QE2 - I think was one of the first liners to use this.

Looking at the Flickr set again during lunch break.

Particularly love the shot in the link below - but it makes me feel elated, proud and very sad all at once!!

As we say in Scotland at times like these.... "Ach  :( "

I just love seeing those QE2 pic's from 1969-70. The fashions being worn by the passengers appear more modern than those worn by passengers who travelled on the France.  Or did the QE2 attractive a younger more fashionable clientelle than the France.

Bill Miller has made several comments (he saw her enter New York harbor on her maiden voyage to New York) that QE2 was "The It Girl", the ship on which everyone wanted to travel and be seen, and that she was a thoroughly modern ship, representative of her time.
QE2 - the ship for all of time, a ship of timeless beauty !

Looking for inspiration for me QE2 model came across this, I wasn't aware that the dark colour was painted on the superstructure , thought it only under the bridge & davits. Makes the prom look dark, I have no intention of painting out the white. Note also the blackplastic handrails

I'd like to assume that was the brown sludge color?

It looked strange when you were on boat deck I'm sure, but from afar, with the black davits, i think it made her look incredible.  Even more long, low and sleek than she really is.

Read somewhere that the colour scheme was designed to give the impression that the lifeboats were floating  when viewed from afar , the bit under the bridge was painted in the same way to give the same effect for the bridge, but as I mentioned previously , hadn't been aware to the extent of  buff paint on the superstructure.
Only goes to show the thought & detail that went into her design...
