You may be surprised to read that there is an inland lighthouse in Ireland, in the middle of the country, far away from the sea. It is quite a landmark near Kells, Co. Meath, and has an interesting history.

It was built as part of a famine relief project, started by a local landlord, who loved lighthouses and decided he could put his starving tenants to work and build him that lighthouse which he had always wanted to own.

I see in the above link that the lighthouse can actually be visited on Fridays during summertime, and this will be something for my to do list next year!

Peggy’s Cove in Nova Scotia has a lovely lighthouse
Best seen before visiting times!
