MV Discovery (ex-Island Venture, Island Princess)
« on: Dec 31, 2011, 04:56 PM »
Discovery Club news, the magazine for past passengers, has a 'good news' item regarding MV Discovery, (ex Island Venture 1972, Island Princess 1999-2001) P3 gives a comprehensive list of upgrades both current & ongoing, including amongst others as enhanced communication equipment, & cabin refurbishments  The item titled   A Bright Future For Discovery continues......

''Discovery is currently planned into drydock fora 3 month refurbishment programme in November 2012.We will be focusing not
only on the guest/hotel side but also on technical enhancements which require updating. This includes, but not limited to,
updates to the water storage facilities, updates to the watermaking (reverse osmosis) systems and fundemental steel works
around the lido roof and fan rooms. There are also a number of additional technical updates we will be undertaking on the ship
    management systems.

We are also planning to renew the teak decking in most areas, resolve the intermittant issue of the sliding lido roof and then
look at optimising the Lido as an alternative dining experience.Carpets, flooring soft furnishings and new furniture will be
reviewed and updated and we will be adding new flat screen TVs throughout and reviewing cabin furnishings. At the same
time we are looking at innovative ways of remodelling the ensuite bathrooms''.

I hope you agree that this is good news to finish 2011, her owners are to be congratulated on investing, in one of the
grand ladies of the sea. (our 1st ever cruise  to North Cape & Spitsbergen on Discovery, of similar size & vintage as Ruby)

Have posted a couple of links to Youtube (as ever thanks)

;D O happiness, o joy, another classic ship (which visited Auckland as ISLAND PRINCESS) that has escaped the fangs of Alang for a few more years. I've just listened to her captain praising her, well he should know.
In fact, just last week I had the pleasure of viewing 3 ships who visited us all on one day, the SILVER SHADOW, the SPIRIT of ADVENTURE (ex BERLIN) and the COLUMBUS. All were attractive.

June issue of Discovery Club News,  selective  quote from a lengthy article......''three dockyards are being considered for the (3 month )refit,  three tenders being considered for the hotel refurbishment,  artists will be commissioned to offer a more visual feel to proposed changes. In specific  relation to many customers'feedback, I can assure you it is not our intention  to alter ' Discovery' beyond recognition, we are just sprucing her up. Once we have the details, you will be the first to know as we feedback the information both via our newsletters and with our newly launched blog''. Discovery has her 1st post re-fit cruise departing Mar 5th 2013.  I find this such good news her owners are to be congratulated, on their continued support for her, I only so so wish the owners of Ruby would show the same foresight before it's too late.

No doubt the story has been brought up to date in another thread but in case this has not happened and there may be someone out there who has not heard the news that the Discovery is in 2013 operating as the fleet-mate of the Marco Polo for Cruise and Maritime voyages as a replacement for the Ocean Countess.

This is amazing.  Do you know which ship this is ?  Perhaps if a number of us worldwide could win several lotteries, we could cumulatively buy back our QE2...if only.

We can dream...
"The QE2 is one of the last great transatlantic liners, and arguably the most famous liner in the world"

"QE2 and Concorde, a partnership that lasted almost 30 years... two stunning pieces of engineering, never to be forgotten!"

We did sail on this ship a couple of years ago and I have to say I felt the operators had let the ship down…standards were so low we ended up leaving it a few days early and flying home!  Reading recent reviews it seems things have not really improved…the ship itself could have been lovely, but to us had ended up being rather sad...

She is being sold by All Leisure Group at the end of summer, so will complete her current contract/season with C. & M.

My wife and I went on a cruise on Discovery last August/September, and, although we enjoyed the cruise itself, found the ship to be in terrible condition (the planned upgrade had never taken place).

Promises, promises, looks like another one will be leaving us soon, our 1st cruise was on Discovery well over 10 years ago, she had not long been out of an expensive refit, she was quite fit then!!!!

Not being a technical person, I don't know the significance, but in June 2012 in order to maintain normal progress both props were required to spin a different speeds…we spotted this, and asked one of the engineers about it on a bridge tour…en route Norway to Iceland...
