Outdoors on QE2 in 1969

When QE2 entered service the handrails on the outdoor decks and external areas were black plastic. When serving as Chief Officer (1981 – 1985) Ron Warwick (later QE2 Master) received approval from Cunard to replace the plastic with teak.

The wood was stowed on board and over several months the plastic was replaced by the ship’s carpenters.

Railings on the foredeck still had the original black plastic handrails when QE2 retired on 2008.

Great and historic photos! The stairs up to each bridge wing also kept their black plastic handrails until they were removed during the 2006 (I think?) refit.

One of the film photos I took as a 6 year old in August 2003 to show the above (is really a photo of my parents in much happier times and is one of my favourite photos of them as a result).

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.
