The glass patios of the Grand Suites
« on: Feb 12, 2017, 03:44 PM »
Now - a question for either Rob, Holy Nougat and or Flagship!
Please -  immediately aft of GBTT, it looks as if there are two 'greenhouse-like' areas of glass panes either side of the base of the great Mast, enclosing something, one on portside the other starb'd - with an entry in between the two...

Please can you say something about the enclosures etc?
Thank You
Rosie

Rosie, the "greenhouses" are the conservatories, which were part of the grand suites on QE2.

Here's a couple of pictures taken 2.5 years later during my Dubai trip :-

Oh Rob - Thank You!
These have got to (have) be(en) The most Exclusive 'Balconies' in the world!
Can you imagine, in complete privacy - sailing towards the UK / 'New World', at 32 knots, into a great F6+ headwind -
with the whistling 'breeze' so loud that even the Guests couldn't hear themselves speak,
alternatively, cosy Dining Out in the warmth of the Med, or even sitting out in the fog of the Grand Banks....
Even rain on glass - this must have been impressive too...
The question remains - Why The Heck did she Ever go to stay away from home...?
No other ship has so many wonderful places on board - all for the joy of the Guests.

Just wishing I'd known about these, and always regret not taking a sneaky peek in to the Bar of The Princess Grill....

To Lachlan - Please, you won't leave these off your great model, will you...please?!

Here's a view looking from the suite through "the greenhouse" to the balcony.

If you stood on the little platform, you got a great view forward. Not sure I'd want to try it into the teeth of a 30 knot gale though . . .

My wife and I managed a self-guided tour during a stopover in Southampton between back-to-back voyages (we decided to tag on a short 3-night cruise to our main holiday as it was to be our last time aboard QE2).

An aside:

The patios / greenhouses were built during the repair work undertaken in July 1988 when she was given new propellers. In the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth Suites: Both suites were altered and refurbished. The living room area was re-arranged with a new position for the sofa while the stairs leading up to the area were also re-arranged. Patios, similar to glass conservatories, were built and fitted with additional seating. A new headboard was also fitted above the bed.
