Positive update sent to the Friends of PS Waverley. However, as they still need financial support I am sure they would appreciate donations, no matter how small, so that we can sail on her again this Summer.
https://waverleyexcursions.co.uk Waverley left her winter berth in Glasgow shortly before 2pm on Wednesday (21st April) under her own power to sail down river to Greenock and for her annual dry docking. After swinging at the Tail of the Bank she berthed at Greenock’s Custom House Quay. Given that news of Waverley’s first move of the year spread quickly some people gathered to see Waverley arrive. It was great to feel the excitement that Waverley generates wherever she goes. Everyone was thrilled to see this grand old lady of the Clyde out and about once again.
Shortly before 5pm she made the short journey to Garvel Dry Dock at Dales Marine shipyard under tow. Waverley was then slowly eased into the dock and made fast before the gate closed and the process of pumping the dock dry could begin.
During this dry docking the bow will be repaired, several paddles will be replaced, the hull will be painted, some steel will be replaced in the port paddle box as well as a full survey of the hull. Dry docking Waverley is the single largest expense of the winter refit and it is being funded thanks to those who have continued to support the ship over the past few months. Without the generosity of our supporters over the past eight months, this dry docking would not have been possible.
Following dry dock it is anticipated that Waverley will return to Glasgow for final preparations ahead of returning to service in June. We know there are likely to be further costs incurred as we recommission Waverley for the season and donations to our Covid-19 Relief Appeal would be most welcome. The appeal has now reached £330,000 which is deeply appreciated. However, given that we often have to fund additional works just before Waverley enters service we would like to reach our £350,000 target by late May.
