Very sad news and my condolences to his family and friends.

He was the last Captain I sailed with aboard QE2 in September 2008 and was kind enough to treat us to a coffee in the Crystal Bar and a lengthy chat about the great ship.

Yet another old Cunarder crosses the bar, sad indeed. I sailed with David when he was a First Officer on the Countess.  I recall him being a true gentleman and interesting to talk to.

My wife and I had the pleasure of sailing with Captain Perkins during his final command of QE2 in August/September 2008.

I took this photo of him securing his ship in Southampton on 10 September 2008, his last day as Captain.

It was a privilege to sail with him...

Very sad news indeed. We were on the Sydney to Southampton leg of QE2’s final world cruise, and Captain Perkins was the skipper for part of that cruise. He would frequently come around and speak to guests, asking how we were enjoying the cruise etc. He was a big man, and once jokingly said “that rolling we experienced yesterday was caused by me walking from one side of the bridge to the other”. He was replaced by Captain Ian Macnaught, and before leaving he addressed the passengers informing us he had been appointed master of Queen Mary 2, as he put it, “a big man for a big ship”.
Vale David Perkins.

It is so nice to read all these memories of Captain Perkins and I am sure that in time, the comments will bring some comfort to his family.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Tributes have been paid to a Bury St Edmunds man who was the last appointed captain of the world’s most famous cruise liner, the QE2.
