Mies van der Rohe Chair
« on: Dec 23, 2019, 07:37 PM »
O K , got this book off the bay recently, desperately trying to read it before we might move, am passing it on to June soon, but,      well better say what it is   : QE2, Queen Elizabeth2, The Authorised Story.
it must 've been popular printed in 1969, this is the 2nd edition also 1969.
  So to the chair,  p131:
'' The QE2 is a modern ship and we have tried to use things and ideas which we feel are of classic simplicity and will not date too soon.  Undoubtably the ship will date, but pleasantly.   There is a chair in the ship designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1926 which is an early classic and looks fine in its application to a modern setting''......................................

Any ideas & where did it go,  how did it end its days?.

Pete, I do not know anything about the chair, but would like to mention the book, about which we have a topic here :

https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php?topic=6741.0

Would you like to add a few words about the book in the topic, when you have finished reading it?

I realise this may not be the best time to ask you about this, but it would be great if you can manage.  :)

To my mind, it was probably the best book I have read about QE2. Sadly, it got lost in the post after  I sent it to harev as a prize in the photo competition... It is a rare book now, and Pete, how wonderful that you managed to track down a copy!

Mies van der Rohe was the last formal director of The Bauhaus.  Functionality and accessibility were two of the prime forces in the early Bauhaus movement.  And the modern look would have fit right in with the design of QE2.   :)
QE2 - the ship for all of time, a ship of timeless beauty !

Does the chair that you mention, Pete - does it look like these?
Are they the classical Mies van Rohe Brno chairs - in the Princess Grill?
Or maybe in the Theatre Bar...
https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php?topic=8713.msg100496#msg100496

Or possibly the very different  Mies V D Rohe Barcelona chairs which were possibly in the Grand Lounge
and I think we may have had a chat about them with Michael in the early days - they are also visible in the VADS journal.

Message to Michael - please, and definitely, if it's not too much trouble - Learning about the Chairs designed for / found on QE2 would be really one of the Best Good Reads!!
Greetings, and Thank You
Rosie

Rosie is correct! The Mies van der Rohe chairs were found in the Grill Room in 1969 where they remained until 1972 when the Grill Room closed (see the first three images).

In 1976 the Grill Room returned as the Princess Grill and the Mies van der Rohe chairs were mixed with the Race chair (found in Columbia and Britannia / Tables of the World Restaurants) as can be seen in the fourth picture.

Some of the Mies van der Rohe chairs  were used elsewhere over the years - recovered in light beige in the Double Down Bar and in green in the Midships Bar.

I don't think they were used in public rooms after the re-engining!
