Excellent notes, Michael!  :) Didn't realise quite how extensive this refit was although I had read about the Caronia Restaurant's major refit and the major sandblasting in some of your previous posts on the forum, Michael. The Caronia Restaurant is in the midst of major work again as we speak.

First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

Thank you very much, Lynda and Michael! Putting all this together and bringing it here, really was a labour of love, many thanks :) .

As someone who first set foot on QE2 in the year 2000, I am amazed to see here that much of what I regarded as "normal" on QE2, was actually created at the 1999 refit.

My Mum had been on board for the first time in 1998, and she noticed quite a few differences -- but not all of these!

Likewise, thank you for compiling and posting on the forum for all to see Lynda!

1999 was the refit when they completely removed ALL the paint from the hull and repainted her. It was reported that in places the paint was almost 50 coats thick! Afterwards her speed went up by 1/1.5 knots and fuel consumption improved by single figures.

Note: see refit information

If i remember rightly these were added in the 1999 Bremerhaven refit, when all 3 Cunard large ships were refitted concurrently. Well almost QE2 & RVS arrived together, RVS was finished and was leaving as Vistafjord arrived to be transformed into Caronia. I think QE2 was in for - possibly - over a month, whereas the others were only 2 or 3 weeks.

The story that all 3 Cunard ships were in Bremerhaven at the same time is true, but only just! In practice, Seabourn Sun (RVS) was leaving on the evening tide on the day that Vistafjord (Caronia) arrived, so all 3 Cunard ships were in Bremehaven at the same time, but only for a short period of something like 10/12 hours.

When Caronia's dry docking was finished she left QE2 behind in Bremerhaven and headed off to Liverpool for her naming ceremony. This was to be performed by Rt Hon John Prescott MP (Minister for something or other) who was a former Cunard Steward.
It was during the renaming ceremony that he made two 'wonderful' mistakes!
Firstly he referred to Mr Larry Pimentel, the CEO of Cunard at the time, as Mr Larry PIMPERNEL, this raised many sniggers and much amusement among the crew. Secondly, he referred to the new colour of the hull as 'Confederate Grey' instead of it's correct name 'Federal Grey'!

But overall a very interesting day and one to remember for all the right reasons.
After embarkation of our 'special' passengers followed by dinner and fireworks at around 2100, we left on the tide and began a swift, if somewhat sightly bouncy passage back to S'ton and our first cruise as 'CARONIA' .
