QE2 Chief Engineer 1986 to 2002

1968 to 1978 Progress from Cadet to 2nd Engineer:  experience of working on the following vessels: aircraft carrier, frigates, oil tankers, cargo ships, ammunition ships, helicopter support and troopships.

1980: appointed Chief Engineer on Cunard Countess.  The vessel was requisitioned in 1982 by the Ministry of Defence for the Falklands conflict. Involved in the design configuration and project management, of replacement Wartsila alternators and new steam plant.

1984 appointment to Chief Engineer on Cunard Princess.
Tasked with the re-engining, planning, design and configuration of a new power plant and public room
modifications.

1985 appointed Technical Superintendent for the machinery conversion of the Princess. In the same year
appointed General Manager for all commercial aspects of ship operation.

Queen Elizabeth 2:
1986 appointment to Chief Engineer of the QE2.
Project Manager for the machinery conversion from steam to Diesel Electric.
Co-ordination of the final design and installation with Lloyd Werft, MAN, GEC and others. Made significant
contribution to the development of MAN medium speed engines, Lips propellers and GEC Alstom electrical
systems.
Establishing the operating philosophy, team building and procedures of QE2 and the operating budgets from
1987 to 2002.
Successful management of refurbishments, dry docks and capital upgrading projects.
Carrying out complex ‘in water’ repairs and diagnostics.
Appointments ashore both in New York and Southampton as Technical Superintendent.
Technical management for design considerations for the Queen Mary 2 and Swift project for Carnival /
Cunard.
Contribution of technical material for maritime publications and technical manuals.
Lecturing for universities and professional institutions.
Production of technical documentary film for Cunard Line.

Steven Hare was the longest serving Chief Engineer onboard QE2 and completed 250 Atlantic crossings and covered 1,500,000 nautical miles worldwide.
