The boat train is run as a charter, not a daily service, so is only occasional and has to be booked at the same time as the voyage, and even then you'd need to be on the route of it.

QE2 was moments away ;D

Southampton boat trains axed

Interesting discussion starting on about the 3rd post on this thread elsewhere http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=75633 in which it is alleged that Carnival have indirectly killed off the boat trains that only re-started last year by pushing charges up.
