Exhibition "FRANCE" - Le Havre, Summer 2012
« on: May 17, 2012, 06:35 PM »
As it happened two years ago with the Normandie, Le Havre will host a photographic exhibition about the France throughout the city for the entire summer.

See the pictures online here: http://fr.calameo.com/read/000427017866c9be5d22f

They're just breathtaking, I hope they will make this catalogue available for online reservation and delivery and I've already asked Le Havre's Tourist Office about it.

Wow, these pictures are fantastic and very moving.

There's even a beautiful picture of QE2 at anchor on page 73, maybe off Cannes. Or some Caribbean island where both QE2 and France would frequently meet, being both unable to dock alongside because of their deep draught.

Thank you for the link, Matteo.

In my opinion QE2, France and Michelangelo/Raffaello were together the apogee of ocean liners, both for style and engineering. After them, nothing else ...  :-\

Due to a number of coincidences I visited one of the exhibitions, which opened today.  There a number of artefacts from the ship, including chairs, loungers, cabin mock-ups and numerous pictures of the construction as well as CGT posters for the vessel.

The stand-out is one set of the illuminated lettering of France which reside either side of her aft funnel.

For me though the memorabilia from Normandie was fascinating, especially the furniture from one of her first class salons.

Brochures & catalogues of the France exhibition are available from the museum gift shop

There are three seperate exhibitions in the city but all remembering SS France;

Espace Andre Graillot, Musee d'art moderne (Muma) and the promenade at Plage et promenade des regates.  I only managed to get to Muma, the first hadn't opened at the time.

Well, at least they do something to remember their ocean liners' heritage.
