Hello all,
I don't want you all to spill your porridge when you see this!
I though the QV was ugly but wait!! Look at this upcoming NCL monster!
Cheers!
-
Isn;t it strange that the Vista Cunard "let go" to build the QV bacame the Arcadia (P&O). This ship looks more "got together than the QV. What do people think?
Cheers!
-
And the QE2 is beyond compare!
-
I totally agree Rosie.
-
I agree Edmund that Arcadia always has looked better than QV, the all white colour scheme seems to suit the design better, the dark hull combined with dark glass of all the balconies gives QV not enough white superstructure, looks too dark overall in my opinion.
Sadly Arcadia has just had a refit which has seen a load of new cabins added to the stern, this has squared up the stern and made the ship even more boxy and less attractive, if they do the same to QV at some stage, as I suspect is likely as other member of the class have been so extended, then there is no hope at all for QV!
As for Norwegian Epic, I just don't understand! All that money, a ship so huge, a clean drawing board from which they could have created anything they desired and someone somewhere has decided by choice to make it look like that?! I wonder what the people of Norway think about the name of their nation being associated with such a ship! Am just glad personally its not British Epic or English Epic! Oh how I wish to design and build my own, show the, all how it could be done! ;-)
-
;D O my giddy aunt! if this is the future of cruise ships, count me out. That ship is fugly, even Vicky Brown looks good in comparison. Has anyone seen Oasis of the Seas. Arrrgh, another heap of ugliness.
I flee in horror, back to our lovely QE2.
-
I don't mind the hull artwork, it's rather pretty, but the ship herself looks top-heavy and ugly.
-
And the centre of gravity has no doubt been fully modelled and agreed by an Interior Designer/curtain maker, sorry Professional Marine Architect, and is at what point exactly on the ship ? and no doubt allows for the ever changing tolerances required by refits/passenger numbers etc.......,
-
wait a minute, this has been done before by NCL when they added all the rooms to the Norway, ex France
I always thought Norway was never as attractive as SS France due to the upper level additions, fan-tail and paint job. I understand shipping line colors but there is no argument in which ship is more attractive when comparing before and after photos. Of course this is a big reason I (and most if not all on this board) want to keep QE2 as is. You can't improve on perfection!
Dead are the days of ocean liners and very much alive are the days of hotels built on ship hulls - a pity.
-
there's been a van painted with similar graphics outside my home for several days....gone now, thankfully!
You poor thing. Take a couple of aspirin and a large glass of whatever you fancy. Then go and lie down for a few hours - you'll feel better then!
-

-
"You - or someone - should have gone to Specsavers" Aaaargh!
-
You are joking arent you,Rob?
-
That hideous god-awful ship makes me want to cry. And she is, arguably, the state of the art.
Once upon a time the beautiful Queen Elizabeth was the biggest liner in the world, now that.... THING... is!
THere's going to be a disaster on one of these awful creations, there really is. But i won't be there to see it, because i have no intention on ever being on board any of them!
-
Hey Rob
(It's lop-sided, got a sputnik and baby, three oversized cotton reels with clothes pegs sticking out and a washing line astern... It might even be making qV feel a bit better!)
In truth - a Travesty.
Thank goodness (again) for QE2.
-
It might even be making qV feel a bit better!
Less lonely perhaps! Although, as there are quite a lot of Vicky clones about, I doubt it ;D
-
Definitely not her best side and she doesn't have all her make-up on. But QE looked good even during her run for life across the pond to New York during WWII. Big difference: Pop culture vs the Classics.
What the heck is that balloon thing?!?!?!
-
What the heck is that balloon thing?!?!?!
Isn't it a hairdryer, or a Mother Sputnik that's lost the way?
None of it looks dead cool - that's for sure!
-
And there are so many unattractive ships out there!! I check the live cams for the QM2 and QV several times a day and when they are in port near other ships, I always marvel at how boxlike some of the other ships are (usually they are bow to stern so you can really see them). They look like they would tip over! The QM2 is near one today in Norway!
-
What an awful design!
-
OMG. That is all I can say...

I think there is something odd with that initial picture, maybe lense distortion or a little photoshopping. The ship is actually quite wide, and while not my cup of tea, the ship profile is not bad if you look through the pics posted here. I know it's all balconies stacked one on another, but I do find that the designers have done a decent job with the overall look, in stark contrast to the NCL Epic abomination. At least the forward structure is set back from the bow and there is a sizable bow area. I jsut have not desire to be on such a ship that turns inself inwards from the sea and creates the illusion of NOT being at sea. If I want to go to Central Park, I'll take the train into NYC and see the real thing. Another dubious design idea is the elevator bar.

You know, I was confused for a moment by the zeppelin and thought we were looking at the aft of the EPIC (that wacky monster). I was on a Abomonation of the Seas ship and from the outside she wasn't as ugly as my apprehension anticipated ... but onboard my only thought was "when was this tissue box going to pull over and let me off". I hated every minute. There was a shopping mall in the center as the "heart of the ship".
-
I found the blimp the funniest thing. Is that for use if you want to escape that ugly looking thing and float your way to Dubai?
-
http://malcolmoliver.wordpress.com/2009/06/11/first-image-of-pos-azura/
If this really is 'the future' - then doesn't it it become even more important for The QE2 to be preserved as she is - and alive?
Oh, sorry - forgot to mention, this is best viewed through frosted specs!
-
Looks like the Azura is getting that rear spoiler or the shopping cart handle looking rear observation area. The future sure is looking ugly....
-
Nice little contrast of sterns:

Now look at Oasis...

She does have a slight list though, so thats one thing (the only thing) she has in common with QE2!!
-
A container ship - 'more like'?!
-
Unfortunatley the demand is not for nostalgia or history otherwise today's ships, at least a few, would look more like our QE2. This is why I continue say pop culture sucks.
We've become so caught up in leisure, pleasure and treasure that we forget the things that are really important! I submit Oasis of the Seas as exhibit A and there is much much more.
-
According to Maritime Matters they managed to loose the blimp
http://www.maritimematters.com/shipnews.html (http://www.maritimematters.com/shipnews.html)
Now do they realise it is not a good idea?
-
"...ship was towing an aerostat (a small helium blimp) which was being tested as a possible passenger "ride"..."
I'm guessing they just cancelled that idea!
-
I love the fact that the aerostat "appeared to float away".

Which stateroom is yours,Rob?

It can carry 3110 passengers and would tower over the QE2.
Well thats as may be, but will there be crowds and fireworks and special editions of the local newspaper? eh? eh?
-
3110 passengers? I can't imagine how big it must be - I will have to check to see if it is coming to Boston - but it may not fit in the channel!! We have QM2 this weekend!
-
It won't be towering over nothing after it rolls over from a good fart belched from the balcony of one of those Tokyo shoe-box-house "staterooms"...
-
I will have to check to see if it is coming to Boston
She will be in Boston on the 24th of August 2009

Having seen Equinox while down in Southampton recently, I can certainly vouch for her unattractiveness

Crown Princess, Celebrity Equinox, Ventura and Arcadia all met in Southampton yesterday :
https://www.flickr.com/photos/31404389@N03/
Here caught very well by foreshore ...
... what a parade of ugly cruise ships...!
-
The most attractive part of all of those ships is the QE2 inspired mast aboard Arcadia.
-
As much as I love any opportunity to sail on cruise ships, or watch them heading in & out of Southampton (so fortunate to have a view over the water!), the increased absence of beautiful lines & external style is quite saddening - recent Flickr photos a case in point.
Many new ships seem to have odd elements taken from 'real' liners - thrown in as a reminder they are actually ships - but function over form reflects corporate design for a new era of cruise vacation demands... Scale & size are often breathtaking, but its a pretty shortlived sensation.
I lost count of the amount of times I'd get up early to watch dear old QE2 arrive, and race over to dock head
to watch her sail up close any chance I could... a profile you could never get enough of, from absolutely any angle..
-
Absolutely Rob and well said (no need to rub it in about living in close proxity though lol!).
-
The most attractive part of all of those ships is the QE2 inspired mast aboard Arcadia.
The foremast and the funnel of the Arcadia are remnants of the original Queen Victoria, before the decision was made to allocate the ship to P&O during her construction.
Regarding the Ventura, we have several versions of this design cruising around the Carribean as Princess ships and they are just as ugly on this side of the pond. We have a few names for them such as the shopping cart or the spoiler for the same design that has that weird appendage at the upper stern. To me, when comparing the Princess design to the new Solstice/Equiinox, they are downright beautiful. :P :o Shhh...I actually like the interiors of these Celebrity ships from an architectural design standpoint. The Ventura just looks like it will roll over in any decent sea conditions and what is with the ugly bridge wing extensions highlighted with the support strut. I guess its a good thing they did not try to make that design into a quazi-queen ala Queen Victoria. :o
-
These new cruise ships (Blocks of flats on steel barges) have no soul at all. They look cheap and tacky and must have been designed by town planners from the 60's-70's!
The vessels look top heavy and one day I feel one will get hit broadside by a huge wave, the lose of life will be in the thousands and we think Titanic was bad!
Cheers
Jeremy.

Amazingly (or perhaps not?) the AIDA ships get good reviews from ocean liner enthusiasts.
The British Ocean Liner Society has been on board for several cruises and produced very tempting reports, together with (to my mind) rather interesting photos of the interiors.
One of my recurrent questions to my knowledgeable friends has been : "Where are the really good ships being built at present? Who is producing the QE2 of our days?"
The answer is, of course, no one is doing so. But on further thought, the answer is "Meyer Werft Papenburg" -- which is where the AIDA ships are being built. Solid design, modern artwork, new ideas, high quality, no fear to pay the price. All in contrast to the shipyards which built the most recent Cunard ship, and are building the next one, which produces ships at a much lower price (with all that that means, of course).
AIDA (as well as Costa) is Carnival owned -- but unlike the other branches of Carnival, these two have been allowed the freedom to design and build their own high-quality ships and to provide high-quality service no longer provided by e.g. Cunard.
I have not tested the AIDA ships myself, but at this stage, would be more tempted to do so than to try qV.
Forum members who are also members of the Ocean Liner Society, or have access to its excellent publication "Sea Lines", can find a thorough review in the Autumn 2008 edition (pages 4 to 14).
Not sure about the "hot lips" exterior... but have a look at a few interior shots, and admire the teak decks :

It took me quite a while to come round to taking a positive interest in the AIDA ships (frankly, the "hot lips" put me off!), but I trust the judgement of those who have recommended them (one of whom wrote one of the outstanding books on QE2...).

Out of curiosity, what does everyone think of the SuperStar Virgo?

I'll join you in holding my breath.
I'll probably get bashed as well - since I think the SuperStar Virgo looks nice. Then again, I do sail on that ship quite often.
-
Is that ships ? Or block of flats ?
Louis
-
I'll probably get bashed for saying this - but it doesn't seem too bad to me!
I agree with Kathy - not that bad. This looks like an older ship and her lines are a morph of a classic QE2-like liner and floating box hotels. Any idea how old this ship is? Hopefully this is a trend to come but I highly doubt it. Too many folks (including me) want private balcony rooms which drives design.

SuperStar Virgo? She's was launched in 1998. Not a very big ship though.
-
the most horrible cruise ship
-
That is really ugly. What a horrible design too.
Louis
-
The more I see of these ugly ships, they remind me of the old Thunderbirds series. They look like the vessels that used to some times appear in it and International Rescue would be sent to save the vessel from disaster, ;D FAB
Cheers.
-
Here she is in her true beauty, I think the artist must have watched Thunderbirds awell :)
-
She looks very different in those two photos -- is the brown version (posted by luzparis) the finished one?
-
The brown version is the real photo,of course it has to be all fitted out and painted.
Louis

In regards to the comments somewhere above regarding Superstar Virgo, I don't think its offensive to the eye as a lot of the others being churned out at the moment are, it is relatively neat and tidy looking, but it is not special, it is not pretty, it blends in with others rather than stands out, and thats not a bad thing in my opinion as the ones which stand out are more often these days standing out because they are uniquly bad, such as Norwegian Epic, only one which stoodout for being uniquely good like QE2 will become truely loved as QE2 was. Oh how I wish someone would build us one of those....

I like her. She is much prettier than a lot of the floating boxes around these days. I saw her in Singapore in April and thought she was nice 'in the flesh', so to speak, too.
-
Advance booking is recommended for this one. All cabins have a sea view.

Robert - Yes...but...Have you clicked on the cruise line link - beneath the good-views-all-round little number?

There's been a bit of a bump...
'Word is squall came up in Cozumel - small dent in stern of Enchantment,
worse damage to promenade deck of Carnival Legend.
....If only it were Cunard and then we would get a
press release about how exciting it was to see the dock move when their ship
came along side .....' :)

I didn't get my first glimpse of the QV on Monday - she was over two hours late leaving port (I was waiting at a nearby park where there is a great view of the ships arriving/departing) - when I drove over the cruise terminal - she was completely blocked by this - the Caribbean Princess! I wish my camera took photos at night - the view of the CP as she was departing looked like a floating office building!!

Totally agree with you there, Rob. The Norwegian Epic's bridge area looks just like a box and 'it' looks top heavy!
Cheers.

We saw the Disney Wonder up close while in Nassau on our Costa Magica cruise to Bermuda and the ships modern interpretation of a liner were in sharp contrast to our squared off boxy floating block of hotel flats on the Magica. Then again, we are also partial to ships with dark painted hulls. ;D

Carribean Princess in NYC yesterday. Is that the bow or the stern? Ugly from every angle. It looks like they added a bridge at the stern. Not sure if I'd want to be up there having a drink in an substantial seas.

That makes the NCL Jewel downright decent looking. :o

-
QE2 docked next to Jewel when we were aboard in September 08. Jewel may be 'okay' on her own, but next to the beauty of QE2 she was simply a floating apartment block, complete the graffiti all over her bow.
The Grand Class ships and their subsequent offspring (Azura et.al) are absolute eyesores - regardless of how nice they may be inside.
Ships such as Oriana, Aurora, Enchantment of the Seas and the Disney twins show us that form and function can be built beautifully. There is no excuse for floating boxes.
-
The Disney ships certainly look the best of the bunch at the moment, as for Carribean Princess words fail me -
This ship for me is the totally pants (northern english expression for rubbish) side of cruising -thousands of people on board, all they are really interseted in is eating, drinking and gambling to excess. No part of their trip is about the experience of the sea or the ship. That said, modern cruise lines have been very sucessful in increasing their passenger numbers of late, and, at the same time sucessful in creating mono box, mobile cash machines known only to them as 'ships' and these are a fantastic vehicle to empty their passengers pockets of money.
I'm sure for some people the 'token' class system on Cundard whereby your evening meal location is determined by your cabin is totally outdated and represents all the negative aspects of English society but they ar probably the same people that were dispondant with some of the smaller QE2 cabins as they weren't all exactly the same as the other cabins they stayed in on their monobox cruise ships......
Sorry Rant over, hopefully no one on here has taken offence!

A block of flats at sea. Actually looks like one of them prison ships.
Cheers.

Looks remarkably similar to Queen Victoria to my ignorant eyes... that is, apart from the obvious difference in the funnel...
-
isabel it's a same class of the QV or the future QE they have for every compagny some modifications !!

Oasis in the paper today:

isabel it's a same class of the QV or the future QE they have for every compagny some modifications !!
I believe the stern is not going to have all those added cabins that make the stern even boxier that it was in earlier Vista designs. With the slightly added length of the Cunard versions of the Vista class of ships, at least the Victoria has a more graceful "liner-like" stern profile. I do use that word loosely. :D I feel that Queen Victoria is the best looking of all the Vista class and derivitives that are in the Carnival fleet.

I thought that blimp thingy was a BOIL on her backside (oops, stern) Ugliness of the Seas, here we come. I wonder if she (it) will come to NZ. ProbaBLY not, too big to fit in Waitemata Harbour
-
Recalling my naval architecture class of years ago, the ship must have a sufficient GM (Metacentric height) for stability and I believe that there are standards such as IMO in place for this. Perhaps someone more familiar with this can chime in. While she most assuridly looks extremely top heavy, locating heavy machinery down low and the width of the ship aid in maintaining sufficient stability and no ship owner can send an unstable ship to sea. Stabilizers are also not a factor in determining stability, but are added for passenger comfort. I do believe that the ship can withstand more severe rolling that its occupants can take. Here's a link to better explain stability, metacentric height, etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metacentric_height
Regarding the Epic, it just looks plain ugly with those added decks, like they were added last minute to increase passenger berth counts without regard to appearance. Actually, it doe remind me a bit of what NCL did to the Norway later in her life. >:(

Ooh... err... has a flying saucer from Mars landed on the back of a giant squid?
-
O good grief, is THAT what {acofic Dawn looks like. This is NOT a sight for sore eyes. As for Undesire of the Seas, I LOVED the stern view with the caption 'does my bum look big in this' Oh, dear, your bum looks huge in anything. When do they build an entirely curcular ship and anchor it as a permanent island?.
Go to sea indeed. Bring back the Achille Lauro - she was a hag, but at least she was all ship!
And they have the nerve to call these monstrosities ships? I have no wish to go in a ship which turns its back to the sea. I love lounging on deck and watching the bow wave spurl out from the bow as the ship goes on.
-
I do agree that many new cruise ships are extremely fugly... but...
to play Devil's Advocate here, the cry of "it doesn't look like a ship" goes back more than a century.
When steam was starting to rapidly replace sail, many mariners were appalled that these new dirty smokey behemouths didn't even look like ships at all.
Commodore David Bone of the Anchor Line makes this point in his autobiography. When sailing up the Clyde to Glasgow, he couldn't believe his eyes at all these unshiplike machines being built at all the shipyards. Of course he was eventually won over.
Cunard was endlessly touting their big Atlantic greyhounds as being floating hotels, "passengers will hardly notice that they are on a ship at all." French Line etc. did the same thing, and this was one of their big selling points of the Queen Mary.
It didn't end with the Queen Elizabeth 2 either. Purists at the time, and many Cunard regulars, hated her. Cunard actively promoted her as a floating resort, a "Vacation Island".
So, it's an old story, and perhaps the ugly boxes crowding the cruise lanes now is a look at what's to come?
"Form follows function" is an old rule of design, and much of what we would consider necessities for a ship to look like a ship, are simply either archaic and obsolete, or no longer wanted by the cruise line customers of today.
When the Mauretania (I) was sent to the scrappers, one of her former captains said that the only thing wrong with her was the public's desire for private bathrooms. And now it's balconies, verandahs, and jacuzzi suites.
But, still, there is no excuse for some of the horrors being unleashed on the oceans of the world. :o
-
I must admit that forty or so years ago sailing up the Clyde on the PS Caledonia I was appalled at a new vessel on the stocks being built to replace my beloved Queen Mary. A year later when I sailed upriver on the PS Waverley and that new liner now named Queen Elizabeth 2, berthed in the fitting out basin complete with funnel and lifeboats being fitted, my thoughts had not mellowed. Then fast-forward to more recent times and I think it is fair to say my views have changed significantly, I must admit that things started to improve with the application of the traditional colour scheme, and were confirmed by the fitting of the larger funnel, or at least that is my humble opinion.
Perhaps one day I might appreciate the looks of Queen Mary 2, in the meantime I will just enjoy the design of the Waverley and Saga Ruby.
-
If I look at ships like the QE2, but also others like the Normandie they were innovative in their appearance, very much unlike anything that had gone before.
So what I'm waiting for is a cruise line to come up with the next QE2. The QM2 is a pale imitation of the style of the QE2, and these Vista class liners are ten-a-penny, boxy things crammed with balconies with massive out of proportion superstructures.
I can be impressed by these new ships, in their size, construction etc, but i can't look at them like I look at the QE2 and say, "that is a beautiful ship".

carnival create a new monster after refit!! the carnival sensation become a real uggly cruise ship
-
Yeeks! :o They take a homely looking ship and turn it into downright ugly. Ahh..the draw of the infamous balcony cabin. Thanks for posting and making the QE/QV sister look beautiful in comparision.
-
It was a happy new year until I saw those pictures!
-
On no... that is terrible!
-
My goodness that is a really ugly was to add extra balconies to a ship. Looks really nasty. Wouldn't those cabins get lots of vibration and noise from the propellers?
And as for the "Pacific Dawn", she looks like a balloon that is about to burst.
-
This is the very first picture in Cruise Critic's QE2 gallery :
http://photos.cruisecritic.com/showphoto.php?photo=13705
Does this picture win first prize in this thread here? It must at the very least be a strong contender ;D !
Pacific dawn - looking anything but....!
An oversized, bloated sea cat, complete with ears and whiskers - not a pretty sight.
Whereas on the image above - there's the finest ship the world will probably ever know
What a contrast!
-
carnival create a new monster after refit!! the carnival sensation become a real uggly cruise ship
Wow! Ugly but fascinating to see what they've done - cutting away the hull plating to make balconies. Hope that doesn't give Isithimar any ideas!
-

-
Oh, Richard and Twynkle, how dare you insult the Pacific Dawn ;D! She is the 'newest' cruise ship in the Australasian trade (sob). She used to be the Regal Princess. At least she does not have new balconies on her bum, er stern. (balconies on the bum sound (and looks) a bit like boils). All these poor bitches cannot help their ugliness, they were all born that way. O, where is the ship that will entice me back to sea. Only SAGARUBY, but unfortunately I cannot go anywhere with her, no money and the day after she comes to Auckland, I will have to do jury service.
And yes, I agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in every age peope dislike the new ships that don't look like the old ones. I can remember my uncles discussing the look of Canberra. They did not like her funnels side by side down aft, nor that she had her boats ' tucked under her arms like a wash woman' but they came to like her. However, I am not so sure the Behemoth of the Seas will become so popolar as Canberra did.

From the L A Times
For sail: 200 homes on a cruise ship
About half of the cabins on the $1.1-billion Utopia, set to launch in 2013, will be offered as permanent residences ranging from about $3.7 million to $26 million....
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-cruise-ship11-2010jan11,0,2549020.story
-
That's not as bad looking as most of the recent bunch, but it's still a floating block of flats - literally if they're selling cabins as permanent residences! What happens during refits? Would they put the permanent residents up in the nearest hotel for the duration or expect them to find their own hotel?
I notice it has a pointy rather than a blunt bow and proper propellors rather than pods, but are those lifeboats really adequate?
-
I suppose this is similar to "The World" which is home to residents - however this is 100% residents plus the crew, where as the "Utopia" would basically be 50% residents, 50% cruise patrions.
Also an interesting note on "The World" is the 6 Bedroom, 6.5 Bathroom Penthouse (Currently forsale if anyone has the money ;))

Would someone please explain why the exhaust pipes have to stick up beyond the funnel casings on ALL the ships in this topic??
-
^^^^^
Errrr... because they are ugly ships, Rob? ???
-
Not ALL ships have them totally exposed, but that is an excellent question. 'll post a pic of one of the Costa yellow funnels. There is a black band of bars at the top that conceal the exhausts.
-
It's mostly form and not function. The shape of the funnel and it's aerodynamic interaction with the superstructure drives design. The extended pipes are just the architects artistic touch on the design.
-
While the Costa Magica won't win any beauty contests, I did like photographing the funnel. :) These were taken just at sunrise, before the ship attempted to enter the narrow channel into Bermuda. Only a few ship nuts were up to see this.
I can also report that without any scoops or any other aerodynamic add-ons, the aft end of the ship would have soot on the decks in the morning. Running my hand over the teak rails early that morning, they, along with the deck, had a fine film of black covering everything at the stern.
-
Having just seen the shots of the QE floatout on another thread, I think she is more than qualified to be listed in this thread as well!
-

Oh!
Interesting - isn't the golden Rule meant to be 'function first', then form?!
-
One would think but there are always trade-offs for one reason or another.
-
One trade-off on QM2 with the scoops and shortened funnel is she looks like she's got elephant ears. :o i personally would have made them shorter and dealt with a little bit more soots on the decks. I wonder if they aren't as effective at slower speeds?

I just found an interesting perspective of the Burswood Casino here in PER, and i havent noticed untill now, but the Casino & Hotel looks like the stern of a modern day cruise ship! Buildings and ships should not look alike!! Have a look!

"Buildings and ships should not look alike....."
And if they do, it's a sad reflection on their designers - and their knowledge of good looking 20th Century ships!
I feel really sorry for ships that are building look-alikes - they can't do anything to help their appearance ;)
-
I thought when NCL dredged this monstrosity up from the bottom of a dock in Germany they'd hit the rock bottom of ship design, however I was wrong. :o

That is an impressive video, Pat. If only there could be a new France. But somehow, I suspect this France will not get built. Those weird funnel-like structures seem so top heavy. All I can think is the Poseidon Adventure!
-
I like the new France!! Its a nod to the original, but not Retro in any way. Bring it on!
-
And don't forget the lifeboats! (notice no life boats on "(no) boat deck")
-
She must be unsinkable then! ;)
-
Well, that video has knocked me sideways, I actually like it! She's modern yet her lines appear classic. A liner for the 21st century :o

I like the hull shape but I'm not keen on those accomodation blocks, although I can see why they have designed them like that.

While trying to find new photos of Disney's Dream, which was floated out today, I found this on the Meyerwerft website. Here's a teaser. They should keep her in the shed. This ship appears to be done in the "Epic" way of adding additional decks! Imagine if the building were higher what the ship would have looked like!

For the record, I was kidding about loving the hull graphics. Does anyone know the rational why gaudy lips and eyes need to be painted on the bow? I mean, NCL does it with the Jewel with tacky jewel tatoos down the hull, but these ships are creepy with these graphics. FYI, they're part of Carnival, to throw some gasoline on the fire here.

Perhaps it's the ship's Halloween costume!

Saw this one today in Ft. Lauderdale, Coral Princess. Not sure what the purpose of the things on funnel are: jet engine assist?

Yes RiskyG If an 'ugly sister' was the case in mind, at least the company have had the decency to promote her as such! I heard that the New Yorkers know her as Peter Max, her artist signed her bow!
Graffiti a la the Mauritania had such style, don't you think?
'my' local cruiser HMS Belfast looks fantastic in nearly 5O shades of grey, but had Peter Max been parked for any duration in the same mooring, alongside the shard, the upcoming cheese-grater and the gherkin, there might have been questions in the House!

In my view, these kind of ships are floating blobs with no personality. One look at our QE2 and you see her exuding personality with a feeling of power and excitement, not to mention beauty, elegance, grandeur, and grace that no other ship can equal. I guess you can tell how much I love our QE2 !

Interesting, though, that what is effectively a mile long aircraft carrier built by the private sector carries the same price tag as the two much smaller public sector carriers being built at the moment....!!
One saving grace - it says this monstosity is too big to ever enter port anywhere ( wonder how they're going to build it, then.. ) so at least it'll be out of sight!

They've just dusted this concept off to give it another spin - it was in the news a couple of years ago (given how time flies, it may even have been longer ago). I reckon there'll be a lot of water under the bridge before this ship gets off the ground!

They really should learn not to build all these flats in flood plains these days...
-
Hi Peter - I agree. Also, I need to take back my comment about a painted whale. I rather like whales and I am afraid I have gravely insulted them by likening the "painted thing" to a whale. It is beyond me how anyone can see any beauty in flood plain flats ! June
-
At least they have painted her colourfully to distinguish her from the buildings behind. She has some nice bits but the whole does look like a block of flats. I think it's the balconies that American cruisers seem to like.
I have recently cruised in the OOSTERDAM and had a cabin with no balcony. I laughed when the Americans complained they could not use their balconies because it was too cold (south Tasman Sea in early November).

I'm on this later this year for a cruise to Norway to celebrate my in-laws retirement. Can't grumble too much as it a free trip they are paying for, but, I'm not looking forward to my first trip on a block of flats that's for sure. It's also going to be tinged with sadness as the Norwegian Fjords was always my dream trip on QE2 but I never quite made it before the fateful day came.

I doubt it.

Off topic (or at least the link I am about to post is) however, someone was messing in photoshop apparantly and edited a cruise ship. I found it quite amusing though because if they carry on growing at the same rate, I'm sure they'll start to look like this before long.
Here is the link however I have added the actual photo downloaded from the site as an attachment as the link isn't really to do with the topic.

At a time when much of shipbuilding is moving out of Europe and (mostly) into Asia, it is a pleasure to see that Meyer Werft is continuing to produce cruise ships, to a high quality standard and profitably.
Whether or not we would like to sail on Quantum of the Seas, it is good to remember that building this ship and her successors guarantees hundreds of jobs in Europe now and for another couple of years at least -- something that makes Meyer Werft stand out in this day and age and makes for a rare good news story in European shipbuilding.

Agreed Isabelle - Meyer Werft, Fincantieri and STX (Chantiers de l'Atlantique) all continue to produce excellent vessels. I was working on Celebrity's most recent newbuild Reflection just after she went into service and the quality was very apparent - not just in the spaces the passengers see but behind the scenes as well.
They may not look very nice but I'd be quite happy if the UK was churning them out!!
Gav
-
Agreed, that despite the fact that these ships are too large and not very attractive, ships are still being built and good to know that they are of good quality construction. It indicates the ship building trade is alive and well. Agreed too, that it is too bad that there is none going on in the UK nor the US.

I know that many of you will be too young to remember, but what comes to my mind is 50's and 60's Butlins 'oliday camps!
I am sorry if some people think that Butlins was/is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I only have one instance where we went to one very close to Blackpool in the early 60's we had booked and paid, we didn't even get out of the car. Dad said words to the effect of I'm not staying here and we turned around!
-
How awful !!

This is the photo that went "viral" with the description of 'human lasagna'... Due to the layers of people.
A very long way from the ship we all loved.
-
Not my idea of a cruise ship. I agree with Rod - this is like a Butlins Holiday Camp but at Sea.
I read that the intention was to have more waterslides, so that the "kids" do not have to queue. Why not just take the kids to a theme park.
But I suppose you needs different cruise ships to meet different tastes, however not for me.

When I first saw this image, I just couldn't believe that a ship like this would exist!
When I went on my first cruise a few years back, I sailed on a ship that always made you know that you were on the ocean and gave you a connection to the sea. Ships like the new Icon of the Seas and the Oasis Class lose that and just make you feel like you're in some family resort on land.
Bigger is not always better and this (in my mind) is just too much!

If i was to ever cruise again, and its a big if, this would be the kind of thing l would envisage having a try of . For sure it won't be Cunard , if for no other reason than imaging going back to a product and not liking it .
There's also no reason whatsoever to think about seeing QE2 in Dubai.

Myles, I think you should take up the challenge to book a cruise on this ship and send us picture. Especially on the waterslide. :)

I think you're making a mistake to rule out Cunard and cruising in general. Queen Victoria in particular is so much like the QE2 experience, including a huge number of former passengers and crew who you'd still know. It certainly all felt very similar to me in September, far more similar than the huge but wonderful QM2.

Returning to the subject of the thread...
Do a Google search for "Pangeos the Terayacht", a proposed ship costing USD $8 billion and which would carry 60,000 people...

Pangeos the Terayacht
Seeing the golfcarts running around on the video of that vessel reminded me of 'The Villages' retirement community i Florida ;D

Looks like someone if having a laugh - certainly a contender for the ugliest ship - if you could call it a ship.

ieeeeeeeeeeeee !

Oh boy!
This "terayacht" is reminding me of a similar concept I heard about a few years back, the Freedom Ship. Except Freedom Ship is longer and even has a full on airport on top!

That is NOT a ship! It is an inhabitable turtle!
The hull drag will be horrendous - they will have to put air-bubbling systems under the four legs and the body.
Whenever the thing starts rolling, the people in the end cabins on the arms & legs will be ejected through the deckheads!
And the beam of the thing is so great it will be impossible to get into most ports.
I cannot see any engine exhausts anywhere so I guess they will be where any turtle normally has his overboard discharge!
Once into any sort of a seaway, the loadings on the attachment points of those front & back legs will be into the not-going -to-last-long-territory! Who dreams these idiotic ideas up anyway?

So just to be clear, you're not a fan? 8)

I love seeing a real engineers opinion of these pi in the sky ship designs😀👍
