Title: 1967 QE2 Jigsaw no 1 - The Cruising QE2 - Have a go!
Post by: Rob Lightbody on Aug 30, 2010, 05:23 PM
A beautiful 1967 original QE2 jigsaw came into my possession recently and I decided to sell it on eBay, since I'm broke.  Ethical me decided not to use "my position" to try to boost its sales, and I also didn't want you all to start fighting over it.

Its sold now, and has gone to a very good home, but if you want to see it, here's a link to the photos in our gallery

https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=28

The funny thing is, I had to MAKE the blooming thing to check it was OK and had no missing pieces - it took AGES!  The sky and the "undergrowth" will live on on my mind for quite a while!!

Rob for what its worth these do crop up on ebay more than perhaps we realise, l bought one about 8 years ago for only a few pounds, the jigsaw was still in the bag unopened the seller had it listed wrongly iv seen them go for as much as £40 then again they can go for only a few pounds. As we know there is no rhyme or reason with ebay as to what things go for.

On the subject of not using your position that is to be commended!!! But had you perhaps mentioned it you might have raised a lot more for it and it would have been a way of giving you a boost!! Im  always tempted to thrust something into your hands, But lm never sure how you would take it... :-X

 But next time you visit l must show you a recent purchase, the seller hadnt a clue about it, put it up at a buy it now l was there at the right time,only a few minutes after she listed it, bought it then she emailed asking did l want to buy another one, which l did for a stupidly low price and she emailed again with another item which l snapped at!! In all my 10years of ebaying l have never  seen these 3 items before, and iv seen/sold a lot of QE2 stuff over the years.....

Just in case you did not manage to track down the pictures in our ever growing gallery of memorabilia, here they are.

The completed masterpiece!

Great to see and use these items so closely connected with the QE2 history (in this case, anticipating her history at sea, before she had even set sail with her passengers for the first time!).

Thanks to very generous Rob, I have come into possession of this jigsaw too, and over the Christmas break, four of us had a wonderful time assembling it. My Mum, Pia and I (the QE2 travellers) were joined by my nephew Sebastian, who turned out to be a champion jigsaw puzzler.

Between the four of us, it took us four evenings to complete it.

Here are the first few pictures :

We have meanwhile finished the jigsaw, and it was a real pleasure -- thank you, Rob! In the meantime, we have started another one, a 19th century painting, which is giving us much more trouble...

I would be more than happy to send this jigsaw on its way too!

Any takers, please let us know :) .

Hi Isabelle - All good wishes for 2014 and congratulations on fitting together the new QE2 jigsaw and for posting the pictures.  I would love to get on the list for this one too.  Perhaps we could gather some names over here who would like to have a go at it, and then QE2 could do another Atlantic crossing.  Perhaps Rod ?  Have a great day !  June

I notice it's from the same manufacturer and is the same size and in the same style of the circulating jigsaw; are the two part of a series?  There could be more out there like these two?

The two definitely belong together, and it was lovely to have been able to assemble both.

Here are some pictures of the final outcome :

Hi Isabelle - Thank you for posting pictures of the new QE2 jigsaw.  It is beautiful and definitely belongs with the other.  As Peter mentioned, I wonder if there are more in the series ? An extra piece - perhaps it is a "spare part" !  Thanks for sharing !  June

I could have sworn someone on here said there were 3 in this series, however it seems to me it would make sense to have just two - indicating the dual-purpose nature of this revolutionary new ship - cruising and crossing.

Hi Rob - Could very well be that there are two.  These two do represent the cruising and crossing.  Were there later jigsaws issued by Cunard for QE2 ?  June

I seem to remember jigsaws in the Ocean Bookshop. But as I never went in for QE2 souvenirs very much (until I relented a bit at the very end...), I cannot recall what they were like -- except perhaps that they were very small. Somewhere in our family we also have a QE2 pack of cards.

Thank you, June, for putting in your bid for the jigsaw! I shall be able to send it off towards the end of the month.

Rod, would it be a good idea to "volunteer" for this one too? We still need a photo of you with the puzzle... :) .

Anyone else ready to give it a try on this side or that of the Atlantic / Pacific / Indian Ocean?

Great, Jim! Really happy to see you chime in -- and looking forward to news of your speedy assembly :) .

Would you like to start with this one, which is in the UK at the moment (awaiting news from Helen) :

If you scroll upwards, you will get to see some pictures. We believe that the two jigsaws were published together in 1967.

Like with the other one, I would be interested in having a go at some point.

Again, like with the other one, I would suggest trying to arrange things so that people who are reasonably near to each other to have it in turn to allow hand delivery as far as possible to reduce exposure to the postal system.  The last thing we need is for Postmoan Pratt to lose one of them in the mail system.

Great, Peter !  It looks like we are going to have a number of us having the pleasure of QE2 docking at our homes and us having the pleasure of "building her".

Hand delivery is a very good idea wherever possible.  Maybe I'll have to make a return voyage on QM2 to hand deliver QE2 jigsaw and accompany her on her proxy crossing.  Someday, I hope !!

This jigsaw too is now starting its cruise. Tomorrow, it will travel to the post office and will sail away to Lynda's in Scotland.

The voyage so far :

-- from Rob in Scotland
-- to Isabelle in Ireland
-- to Lynda in Scotland

Where to next? Here are the scheduled ports of call -- not necessarily in this order :

* June
* Rod
* Jim Bennett
* Peter Mugridge

More puzzlers welcome!

The jigsaw has docked at my house in Scotland and I made a start on it yesterday evening.

So far the progress has not been a bit slow so I was glad to read that Isabelle and her family took four days to complete as that put the pace into perspective.

What is really nice is how the scene recaptures QE2 at anchor and the interest from small vessels whose passengers wanted to see the ship.  I am going to take time to enjoy the puzzle.  :)

I have thoroughly enjoyed putting the jigsaw together .

I started working on the jigsaw late Sunday evening and was only able to put the outline together. Then by Monday I could see the outline of the ship and started to feel a sense of achievement

Today, although  I only had the top part of the jigsaw with the foliage and sky to complete I felt this was the most difficult part especially the sky section.

But as you can see I now have a big smile on my face as the jigsaw is complete.   ;D

Was the extra piece still in the packet? I am sure that we must have tried many times, unsuccessfully, to fit it in here or there...

The extra piece was in the box but easily identified as it had a different finish.   I think it could be from a different jigsaw.

I see we have a list of who would like to try the jigsaw.  Let me know who to send this to next and if they send me a personal message with their address I will get the jigsaw parcelled and posted

Good to know it has arrived safely, Rod. Take your time... these jigsaws are there to be enjoyed! Find yourself a relaxed week-end to tackle it -- you may even find a relaxed fellow-puzzler to tackle it with :) .

As for me, the (somewhat bigger) jigsaw I started after this one is still not finished, but I made some headway last week-end. Picture from a gallery, some obscure painter who liked gradations of brown and green. I am having a pause now, but shall happily continue when next I feel inspired!

Hi Rod - Thanks for your post.  Yes, as Isabelle has said, take your time to enjoy fitting together our QE2 (jigsaw).  In fact, she is probably enjoying herself, by proxy, being moored at a friendly house where there are no worries.

Hi Isabelle - Thanks for your post and update on your current jigsaw.  How many pieces in this one ?

To all - have a great day !  June

The jigsaw is still sitting on the dining room table!
But it has made the move with us to our new house!
That is why it has not been started.
Hopefully over the weekend.

Hope the new house is organised, the jigsaw table up, and the photos coming our way!

I also see that June was next on the list of puzzlers for this one -- June, is this still right or am I getting my lists mixed up?

The voyage so far :

-- from Rob in Scotland
-- to Isabelle in Ireland
-- to Lynda in Scotland
-- to Rod in the United States

These are the others who have already said they would like to try it :

* June Ingram
* Jim Bennett
* Peter Mugridge

I suggest that, Rod, you might send it to June first (being in the same country and having generously sent her own jigsaw to me!) and it can then travel on to Jim and Peter in the UK.

Lots of puzzling fun in store for us!

OK, I finally started the jigsaw I have. Then got called into work for 2 days.
I am going to give up and get out of the jigsaw business!
I believe June is the next person on the list for this one?  Looks like QE2 in Tahiti?
Sorry to be so long, but with court appearances, moving house and work etc.....
SO, June if your address is still the same...it will go to you this week!

Hi Rod -

Thanks very much for the update.  There is not any real hurry if you would like to refit our QE2 as your time permits.  If not, then yes, my address is the same.  But no hurry if you would like to finish the refit.  Refits take awhile sometimes, especially if the jigsaw crew get called away for other things.

Hi Rod and All -

My docking crew were at ready yesterday to receive our QE2 (Jigsaw No. 2) as she docked at my house to await my return from work.  Thank you, Rod !

She had an excellent voyage and is currently awaiting her next refit, which I hope will begin soon.

Below are a couple of pictures of her arrival.

Just thought I would give an update on QE2's refit (Jigsaw No. 2).  As mentioned earlier, she docked at my house some time ago, and was given a thorough inspection before going into refit.  However, she was subsequently taken out to sea, all engines at top speed, to see what she could do.  She has arrived back at my house very pleased with herself, and word has it that she has broken her own speed records.  Now, she is ready to go in for refit.  Pictures shall follow.  June    ;D

Hi All -

Rod had sent QE2 (Jigsaw) to me toward the end of August, but due to a very busy work, teaching, and performing schedule, she was not able to go in for refit until now.  During the interim, QE2 (Jigsaw) decided to stretch her legs in the North Atlantic like "The Olden Days", coming back to dock at my house for refueling and reprovisioning.

She had just docked again yesterday, and due to a sudden cancellation by two students, QE2 (Jigsaw) was able to go in for refit.  She made very good progress, the North Atlantic voyages having done her good.

Below are two pictures of her progress, and two will be in following message.

Well done so far, June! I see the refit is progressing to schedule, maybe even exceeding its timeline.

I love these "work in progress" pictures, as everyone has their own way of tackling a jigsaw. Yours looks so neat and tidy, and first things (i.e. QE2) first! Beautiful table too...

Hi Isabelle -

Thanks very much for your post.  Yes, I was actually surprised that the refit was going so quickly.  I also very much like to see the "work in progress" pictures.  Thanks very much for your nice comment about the table; I teach in that room too, so it is a wonder the table has any finish left on it at all.  I have one student tonight, who will be very excited to see QE2 (Jigsaw) in progress.  I have told my students about how the jigsaws make their way around the world, and they have been anxiously awaiting the refit (start) of this one to begin.

QE2's refit went splendidly well and very fast.  She is already pulling at her mooring ropes to get on to the next person's dock.  (Although she did tell me that she does like my house (dock) a lot what with all the attention lavished on her by my students !   ;D)

Right. QE2 is cruising again!

The voyage so far :

-- from Rob in Scotland
-- to Isabelle in Ireland
-- to Lynda in Scotland
-- to Rod in the USA
-- to June in the USA

The others who had expressed an interest were :

* Jim Bennett
* Peter Mugridge

Jim had put down his name for both jigsaws. Maybe June, you could ask him directly whether he can prepare a mooring place for QE2 (and if so, where :) )?

More puzzlers welcome!

Hi All -

Update on our QE2 (jigsaw no. 1) !

She left the docks in Old Mystic, CT, USA, with pilot aboard on Saturday, 11 October, 2014 at 12:44 hours.

She proceeded slow ahead to Springfield, MA, USA, and arrived there on Saturday, 11 October, 2014 at 23:33 hours.

At 4:02 hours on Sunday, 12 October, 2014, she dropped her pilot and began her voyage to Jim's docking facilities (house).  I would imagine that QE2 (jigsaw) was full ahead at about 10:00 hours.

Progress reports will continue as received !

Hi Isabelle,

Photos of the refit uploaded to the gallery as suggested. I like the additional piece which has made its way into the box - several others have commented. The final picture shows it. Does anyone know where it came from? Perhaps we could find out whose it is and re-unite them so they can complete the other picture?  :)

Let me know what the next port of call is for the puzzle.

Best Regards,

Jim

The next person on the list is Peter Mugridge, who is already dredging his port to receive her (it). Another vicarious journey in store for QE2!

As for the spare piece, it was already there when I received the jigsaw, so there is no telling where it originally came from, as I do not know the previous owner... It is a fun piece to have there though :) .
