Picture of 736 Club?
« on: May 01, 2009, 09:50 PM »
Scanning more 1969 35mm slides and ran across this one.  I think this is the 736 Club (current location of the Queen's Grill) and wondering if anyone else can help identify it (I was only 6 1/2 at the time and am having a hard time remembering).  It's either 736 or the very short lived Hide-Away Bar/Lounge which can be seen on Rob's "1969 Cutaway 2" on his website as the "coffee shop" (http://www.roblightbody.com/liners/qe-2/1969_POBI/QE2%201969%20Cutaway%20Full%20Size.jpg).  On my 1969 cutaway the coffee shop touts a "portable disco" whatever that is.

I'm leaning toward the 736 club given the interior decor.  The coffee shop colors are Cunard red and white in both of Rob's 1969 cutaways as well as mine but the 736 Club which can just barely be seen is more in line with these dark colors.

Yes.  I think you are right, Bob.  Its the 736 Club, future Queen's Grill.  I remember the seeing pictures of that lattice work and it looks like the Queen's Grill restaurant done up in a different costume!

Another superb find shared Bob.
So many photos etc in life are taken, stored away and maybe forgotten only to be thrown out in the end by people who don't realise their value (and I'm talking historical rather than monetary value)
Thankyou and well done again .

That room looked far better as a nightclub than it ever did as the QG!

Looking at Rob's "Pride of British Industry:QE2" webpage (http://www.roblightbody.com/liners/qe-2/1969_POBI/index.htm) you can see a photo of the 736 Club just below the black and white picture of the Queen, Prince Philip and then Captian Warwick near the top of the page - the lattice work is the give away.  There is also a lot of other great commercial pictures there that when viewed in conjunction with my 1969 collection of FLICKR, you can get a real sense of what QE2 was like in her early years.

The 736 Club became known for a short while as Julianas Discotheque ( i have no clue why, does anyone?) before it turned into the Casino. After the 1972 it became Queens Grill. The QG was further extended forward on the starboard side with the addition of eight more penthouse suites in 1986.

I think Julianas because of a well know disco in London at the time who helped with running it. The 736 Club also housed the Casino from 1970 until the Casino was built on Upper Deck in 1972.

Yes, that excellent shot is definitely the 736 Club, the space where I spent my first evening on board (October 1970) and my last (October 2008).

The room was very quiet on my first visit but much more lively on my last.  :D

John Little on our Facebook page wonders if the natural light seen in the photo which starts this topic, comes from the skylight windows seen here in another of 'Bob C' 's photos.

That is a great question.  One of the most striking features of that room was the illuminated ceiling at night.  But that photo seems during the day ... its quite possible. I'd love to find out.
