The current photo competition with the theme of QE2 Memorabilia brought in a very poignant picture from Hamburger :

He writes :
Quote
Due to heavy storm, the final call at Hamburg was cancelled. Instead, QE2 was going to Oslo.

And look at the postcard to remember the occasion. The text says :

Final call to Hamburg. MS Queen Elizabeth 2. 8 December 2007. Farewell party, "say goodbye"

There is a special rubber stamp too, and a stamp of a famous lighthouse, and all this was issued by the Philatelic Office. Too sad it never happened...

I would have loved to sail through the Panama Canal on the QE2.

Like Myles it was also a dream of mine to do a World Cruise on QE2 and if we sailed through the Panama Canal then that would have been two dreams come true.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

My dream of sailing on the Q E 2 was shattered when i was due to sail on her in August 2003. On the Tuesday before the Saturday when we should of set sail, i was rushed into hospital for an emergency Gaul bladder operation, thus having to cancel, and it was a dream not come true.

Falklands visit 2001

Remembrance Sunday/Armistice Day Sunday 11th November 2001 - Stanley Falkland Islands.

QE2 was on a voyage down the East coast of S/America and by coincidence, or possibly just good forward planning by Cunard, QE2 was scheduled to be anchored off Stanley in The Falkland Islands on Sunday 11th November 2001.

In remembrance of her Service during Op Corporate [the retaking of The Falkland Islands in 1982] QE2 had  been invited to join the Islanders at their Remembrance Service and, as we would be at anchor The Captain, Ray Heath, & Staff Captain would not be able to leave the ship. As such, Captain Heath invited my self & The Ch Officer to attend on his behalf and lay wreaths from Cunard & QE2. I had formerly been a Royal Marine Warrant Officer and The Ch Off had worked for FI Government Fishery Protection, so we both had links to the islands.
The morning arrived but things were not going to be conducive to tendering from the outset, as there was a storm brewing and as such it was decided that the call would be cancelled. anybody who has  visited Stanley will know that it's  a long, difficult and fairly uncomfortable tender ride at the best of times, let along in rough weather. Still hoping to be able, at least, to join the islanders for their Remembrance Service The Captain tried hard to be able to launch one tender to take The Ch Off and myself ashore, but as time went on even this became impossible and the sad decision was made  to totally abort the call.
A Remembrance Service was hastily arranged for later that morning in the Theatre onboard where the Wreaths were laid, instead of ashore.

I think that this was one of the last times, if not The last time, QE2 visited The Falkland Islands, so it was sad that it should end in such disappointment, not only for the passengers but also for The Islanders.

Our dream not come true, concerned :

  • our very last QE2 port
  • our very last anchor port
  • our very last chance to have an unobstructed view of QE2's exterior
  • our very last sailaway
  • a much awaited final call to a port that QE2 had missed several times
  • a port we had been looking forward to seeing for ourselves
  • a port about which I had known from my girlhood on, as I had a penfriend there
  • a port where we had been promised a Newfoundland Dog, a Labrador Retriever and an Accordion Player
  • a port where we had booked a fascinating excursion...

Can you guess which it was?

A sad day indeed... but of course also a happy day, as we were on QE2!

It was St John's Newfoundland...

We reset our watches by half an hour for this very special port :

... and then, we reset them again in the afternoon, as we continued on our crossing.

We had looked forward to the special day :

Friday 26 September 2008 : St John's

And then, we just steamed on :

It was officially said that the weather had prevented us from anchoring. And it was said by others that we could then steam back more slowly to Southampton, thus saving fuel... Be that as it may, we were sorry to have missed that very special and our final port... but glad to be on board for a few more days!

Every day on QE2 was a dream. I literally saw most of the world. Were there places I didn't see? Of course, but not one regret
